Currently, the global color TV industry is witnessing fierce technological competition. While companies like LG and Skyworth continue to push forward with OLED display technology, making significant strides in the OLED TV market, rivals such as TCL and Samsung are focusing on refining LCD technology through quantum dot applications. In 2017, the introduction of Sony’s OLED TVs and Hisense’s QLED TVs marked a major escalation in this battle, making it one of the most talked-about developments in the TV industry this year.
Data from China Yikang indicates that in 2016, quantum dot TVs outsold OLED TVs by over seven times in retail sales. By weeks 1-14 of 2017, QLED TVs accounted for 4.77% of the total color TV market, whereas OLED TVs only managed a 1.22% penetration rate. Clearly, QLED TVs are proving more appealing in terms of both affordability and visibility. According to forecasts from NPD Display Search, quantum dot TVs are set to grow at an annual rate of 100% in the Chinese market, rising from 600,000 units in 2016 to 1.2 million units in 2017, and globally from 3 million units to 6 million units.
“Next year, the production of OLED TVs is expected to reach only 2 million units, which is negligible compared to the global TV sales volume of 250 million units annually,†added Shilian. “As a result, TCL will continue to focus on quantum-dot TVs, as they represent a more scalable and accessible solution.â€
