Mitsubishi Chemical and Pioneer mass production OLED lighting panel cost can be reduced by 90%

According to Nikkei News, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp. and Pioneer Corp. plan to use new technology to mass produce thin OLED lighting panels, which are expected to start production around the end of 2013, and production costs will be significantly reduced by 90%.

The two companies will set up a plant in Pioneer's plant in Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, to test the technology of coating organic materials on glass to produce OELD panels, with a total investment of 1.5 billion yen. The prototype of this OELD lighting panel is 13 cm long and 9 mm wide and has a thickness of 9 mm. The current production cost per piece is about 50,000 yen. The goal of the two companies is to reduce the cost to at least 5,000 yen. In addition, Kaneka Corp. and Konica Minolta Holdings Inc. are also working towards the low-cost production of OEL lighting fixtures.

Compared with the original LED products, OELD lighting fixtures are thinner and can illuminate a larger range, so it is possible to develop OELD lighting equipment that covers the entire wall and storefront signs without taking up space.

According to Fuji Keizai Co., a market research organization, Japan's OEL lighting equipment sales will reach 1.1 billion yen in 2010, an explosive growth from last year's 170 million yen, and 108.5 billion yen in 2020.
