German new robot for efficient multi-modal scanning system

The Fraunhofer Institute for High Frequency Physics and Radar Technology (FHR) has teamed up with industry partners and crime investigation agencies to develop a multi-modal sensing system that includes high-definition digital cameras, millimeter-wave scanners and 3D environments. Inspection system, this system is designed for future machine platforms. When assembled on a robot platform, the operator can investigate objects at a distance and can be applied to investigations of dangerous (baggage/bolition) groups or crime scenes.

When applied in a crime scene investigation scenario, the robot equipped with the sensor system can scan the surrounding environment through a 3D environment sensor, and take a high-definition photo with a high-definition digital camera to collect evidence on the spot, and use a millimeter wave sensor after approaching objects such as luggage. Scan the inside and send an internal clear image to the investigating agency.

If the bag contains a bomb, it is difficult for the previous technology to perform a 3D scan of the inside of the bomb, drawing a 3D outline to understand the bomb. But with the new multi-modal sensor system, the scanner can read the 3D structure of the bomb and understand how its various parts are arranged. The development team plans to demonstrate the millimeter wave scanner section in April 2016, the remote field test in 2017, and the development of the multimodal sensor system in 2019.
