IEEE will develop a new generation Ethernet transmission standard with 400Gbps bandwidth

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) recently announced the formation of a new 802.3 Standard for Ethernet working group to discuss the formulation of a new generation Ethernet transmission standard with 400Gbps bandwidth. The highest level of the 802.3 series Ethernet standard currently put into commercial use is 802.3bg 40Gbps, and 802.3bj under research can reach 100Gbps, but even this will not be able to meet the ever-increasing amount of transmission data for a long time. According to the IEEE report, if according to the current development trend, 1Tbps network bandwidth is required in 2015, and 10Tbps is required in 2020.

The 802.3 400Gbps Standard Working Group plans to hold its first meeting on May 14-14 this year. The venue is in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Anyone with lofty ideals is welcome to participate.

This year is also the 40th anniversary of the birth of Ethernet technology. In 1973, the experimental Ethernet was born, using coaxial cable transmission, the initial rate was only 2.94Mbps, which is 367KB / s.

In 1982, Ethernet version 2.0 was released and replaced with thick coaxial cable, the speed was increased to 10Mbps, and there was IEEE 802.3 10BASE5 10Mbps in the year, but 100Mbps Ethernet did not appear until 802.3u in 1995, and then reached 1000 in 1999. Trillion, broke through 10 trillion in 2003.
