The new "weapon" of the electrodeless UV lamp to deal with foul smell


With the rapid development of the social economy, various types of pollution have become increasingly serious. Among the complaints about environmental pollution among the people, noise is the first, and the second is malodorous gas. Recently, news came from Fudan University that there is a new "weapon" for dealing with these malodorous gases - the electrodeless UV lamp. The ultraviolet light generated by the electrodeless lamp through the microwave discharge can effectively decompose various malodorous gases without secondary pollution, and the related technology has applied for a national invention patent.

The team chaired by Professor Hou Huiqi, the director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences at Fudan University, has worked hard for more than 10 years.

Odor gas is not just a smelly gas. The common gas, waste, sewage, etc. are naturally malodorous gases, but some are generally considered to be fragrant gases, such as the flavor of the fragrance factory, the bread baking in the bakery. The gas emitted is equally uncomfortable and is actually a malodorous gas. The pollution caused by malodorous gases has a long history and it is difficult to control. Conventional treatment methods include oxidation method, adsorption method, chemical oxidation method, biological method, low-pressure mercury lamp decomposition method, etc., but these methods have secondary pollution and the treatment effect is not ideal.

Professor Hou Huiqi boldly innovated on the basis of summing up the experience and lessons of the predecessors, and proposed to use a microwave discharge with a frequency of 2.45 GHz to generate ultraviolet light with a wavelength of about 200 nm to decompose the malodorous gas. Decomposition experiments on carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and other exhaust gases show that under the same conditions, the decomposition rate of the method is 50% higher than the conventional method. Moreover, in the electrodeless lamp made of such ultraviolet light, an inert gas such as helium can be used as a filling gas in the lamp tube to avoid secondary pollution of mercury. In addition to disinfection, the function of the electrodeless lamp is not inferior. The luminous power of the electrodeless UV lamp is more than 200 watts. Compared with the ultraviolet disinfection lamp currently on the market, the luminous power is greatly improved.

At present, Hou Huiqi is committed to market-oriented technology transformation. He is very optimistic about the promotion and application prospects of the electrodeless UV lamp: "In the future, it will be used in garbage dumps, sewage treatment plants, perfume factories, tanneries, as small as public toilets and bakeries. The land of Wu."
