Recently, the BRICS Summit took place in Xiamen, drawing attention from around the globe. During the event, Dong Mingzhu, Chairperson of Gree Electric Appliances, shared her thoughts on various topics in an interview with World Wide Web reporter Lin Di. She mentioned her focus on technological innovation, stating, “My goal has always been to showcase our technical capabilities. I’ve never prioritized the number of products we sell. Instead, I want people to experience them and feel satisfied with their choice.â€
The accompanying image showed Dong Mingzhu standing confidently beside her latest product developments. When asked about Gree Mobile, she emphasized her commitment to self-reliance and independent research. “We’ve already released our third-generation mobile phone, and the fourth is on the horizon. Our aim is to refine both the manufacturing process and design elements to better cater to user needs.â€
Despite repeated skepticism regarding her ventures into the smartphone industry, Dong Mingzhu remains steadfast in her ambitions. This unwavering determination extends beyond mobile phones to include her bold entry into the automotive sector. In 2016, Gree’s initial attempt to acquire Zhuhai Yinlong, a new energy vehicle manufacturer, fell through due to shareholder disapproval. However, Dong Mingzhu, along with investors like Liu Qiangdong of Jingdong and Wang Jianlin of the Wanda Group, continued to support the company independently.
During the BRICS Summit, Dong Mingzhu candidly discussed her decision to invest in Yinlong. She highlighted its unique selling points, such as the safety, longevity (up to 30 years), and rapid charging capabilities of its titanium batteries. “People often prefer immediate results over long-term investments,†she noted. “But when I chose to back Yinlong personally, I wasn’t focused on quick profits. I simply wanted to contribute to something meaningful. There’s no harm in taking calculated risks when the potential benefits outweigh the costs.â€
Her approach reflects a broader philosophy—embracing challenges even if they don’t yield instant success. After all, as she put it, “Planting trees takes patience, but the shade they provide will benefit future generations.â€
