In the past, identifying issues in sewer pipes was a tedious and labor-intensive process. Workers would either descend into manholes or use a method known as "clapping the abdomen" on the road above the pipeline to detect blockages. This approach was time-consuming and often risky. However, recent advancements have brought about a more efficient solution.
Recently, the Municipal Engineering Maintenance Management Office introduced the Schroeder CCTV pipeline inspection robot for the first time, giving the sewer system a "gastroscopy" to accurately diagnose its condition. This high-tech tool allows maintenance teams to pinpoint problems without the need for invasive procedures.
On the same day, reporters observed a van parked near a manhole. Several workers were on-site, setting up warning signs, preparing pipes, and opening the manhole cover. A small robot was then lowered into the pipe. Within minutes, the staff operated the robot via a computer, guiding it through the pipeline. The live video feed displayed clear images of the inside, revealing that at one meter from the right side of the well, the pipe was clogged with mud, causing drainage issues.
Based on this information, the on-site team directed a suction truck to remove the debris and then used a high-pressure cleaning vehicle to flush out the blockage. This modern approach not only speeds up the process but also minimizes disruption to the surrounding area.
"The underground pipeline is narrow and the air quality is poor, which can be dangerous for workers entering the manhole," said a staff member from the Municipal Maintenance Management Office. "This robot helps us locate the problem precisely, allowing for targeted repairs without the need to excavate the road surface. It significantly reduces the risk to our personnel and lowers the costs associated with excavation and restoration."
The use of such robots has also improved efficiency. If there are serious issues like collapse or severe blockages, the data collected by the robot provides valuable insights, helping engineers design better repair strategies. This not only saves time and resources but also reduces the impact on public traffic and daily life.
