Google last week obtained a patent detailing how the driverless car judges whether pedestrians are likely to cross the street and determine the next step and then inform the pedestrian about the system of their intentions. Since driverless cars are computer controlled, pedestrians cannot expect to know if the car is waiting for them to cross the road through the driver's gestures or eyes.
The Washington Post stated that the patent describes a method of using a digital display mounted on the side of a car to inform pedestrians of the safe passage. The display may show a stop signal, a traffic sign, or just text. The reaction of a driverless car includes stopping, slowing down, or maintaining the speed of the car.
