Maker's favorite ultra-microcomputer: CHIP and Pi Zero competition

For makers, micro-computer boards are definitely indispensable, and the cheap price of micro-computer boards is also one of the reasons that attracts many developers to buy. There are currently two ultra-miniature computers on the market for less than $10, one for the $5 Pi Zero and the other for the $9 CHIP. The debates on the Internet are endless, and people are always discussing which ones are faster, more cost-effective, and more suitable for project production. But these arguments on the Internet are usually ineffective. Today, we will compare their advantages and disadvantages in all aspects.

figure 1

Specification comparison

Pi and CHIP are evenly matched on the main processor, both 1GHz processors with 512MB or RAM. But CHIP uses the updated ARMv7 architecture, while Pi Zero uses the old ARMv6 architecture (also known as ARM11). They are powered by USB, but CHIP can also be powered by a lithium polymer battery and has a built-in charging circuit. Pi Zero requires a microSD card as the storage space for the operating system and applications; the card slot allows the switching software and memory to expand to the same size. CHIP has 4GB of onboard NAND flash memory and comes with an operating system preloaded in memory. But for more space, you must use USB (a faster interface than an SD card) and an external drive or storage device.

Pi Zero provides a 40-pin connector for input and output (I/O). However, CHIP provides two rows of 40-pin female heads - all of which are used as input and output ports, which makes it easier to connect inputs and outputs. The HDMI Mini on the Pi provides video output, and the output of composite video is also possible, but it requires an after-sales welding service. CHIP Although there is an available HDMI accessory board, it does not actually have HDMI, but through the TRRS jack, the composite video output can be achieved (this jack looks like a headphone jack).

The biggest difference between the two boards is the connection aspect. CHIP has built-in Wifi and BLE, and Pi Zero can't connect to the Internet without additional accessories. To make up for this shortcoming, the cost of Pi Zero users will increase greatly. Because you not only need a USB wireless adapter, you also need a powered USB hub, a WiFi adapter, a keyboard and mouse (it only has one USB slot for external devices, and the other is a power supply)

Different design methods

The debate on the web also lies in the difference in product design methods. Which is better, is to make an original product removed from the assembly to make the design cheaper? Or redesign a brand new product directly as you want?

On the one hand, Pi's solution is to use existing designs to remove its components and make it cheaper. So, Pi Zero is a smaller motherboard with fewer connectors. Its CPU is faster than the Raspberry Pi B+, which is 300MHz, but in fact this is due to software configuration settings, which is also achievable on B+.

On the other hand, Next Thing Co., the company has only one ultra-microcomputer in its product lineup. The low price of CHIP is due to the scale effect of NTC and the reasons for its suppliers and manufacturers in Shenzhen, China.

Now let's talk about the release of these two ultra-micro computers. Six months ago, Next Thing Co., the company launched its $9 ultra-minicomputer on Kickstrater, which immediately generated more than $2 million in subscriptions. Now that the motherboard is on the market, it will begin processing the booking on the network on Monday. At the same time, on Thursday, Raspberry Pi FoundaTIon announced that it would start selling Pi Zero for $5 and include a copy of their MagPie magazine. This is immediately available for order, but the sale was sold out on the market the next day.

The cost of use exceeds the retail price

Whether it is CHIP or Pi, the actual cost of the user is higher than its retail price. When completing computer tasks, they must be accompanied by some external devices, such as power cords, keyboards, mice, monitors, and so on. But it turns out that the cost of using the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero is still much higher than CHIP.

Aside from the fact that these actual uses need to increase the cost of various external devices, the existence of these products is still a very good progress. After all, the idea that a 1GHz computer cost less than $10 a few months ago is still a bit crazy. Although these boards require additional equipment to operate, their price is far lower than ever.

Figure 6

User community aspect

Finally, there are user community responses. Since the launch of the Raspberry Pi in 2012, millions of motherboards and a large number of software built on it have supported its super-popular weapon, and a large number of user communication communities have made any use in the process of using it. The problem is solved enthusiastically.

In comparison, CHIP is still a newcomer in this field. But it has made a huge publicity on the product. It leverages the vast community of Linux open source software and hardware that may help it gain access to a large number of followers and build strong user relationships. But now only crowdfunding users have CHIP boards. It will take some time to make up for its lack of popularity.
