VR on the tip, how Chen Chaoyang became a discreet and innovator

At the end of June and the end of July this year, I (Liu Weihua) travelled twice to Shanghai Lexiang Technology (Da Peng VR) to visit their founder and CEO Chen Chaoyang. On these two occasions, I talked with Chen Chaoyang for nearly two hours, and I deeply felt the fearlessness and fear of domestic VR entrepreneurs.

Chen Chaoyang had already engaged in technical research in AR/VR field at Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology University 10 years ago, including AR applications in aviation maintenance, emotional computing, and VR head-mounted displays, etc. Professor of Science and Technology University, Dr. Chen Dongyi. In the early years of college, Chen Chaoyang had studied various VR related technologies. After graduating from the University of Chen Chaoyang, he went to Intel to work on the research and development of the chip's underlying technology, and then left to work with a friend company for nearly a year of OTT R&D. However, after knowing the Oculus Rift DK1 in 2013, Chen Chaoyang’s love of technology and his experience in the wearable computer lab at Chengdu University of Electronic Science and Technology have finally led him to the journey of VR entrepreneurship.

Chen Chaoyang used the personal resources accumulated during his early work at Intel to form the founding team of Big VR. But when talking about building a founding team, Chen Chaoyang repeatedly emphasized his cautiousness in selecting talents. Chen Chaoyang said that the early companies could not afford to be beaten by the wind, so the founding team of the Big VR team he founded was experienced and talented people over the age of 30. Chen Chaoyang believes that young people (especially after the 90s) can hardly recognize potential problems and may cause catastrophic "start-to-go bullies" for startup companies.

Chen Chaoyang said: “The company has spent more than three years in development, and it has been on the tip of the knife almost every day. To live up to the present, it should benefit from the company’s view of talent.”

However, even if Chen Chaoyang has formed a team with rich experience, it does not mean that they can avoid making mistakes. So at the beginning of the venture, Chen Chaoyang, who loves tossing and drumming, also showed his fearlessness.

Chen Chaoyang revealed that at first they studied a reflective Cardboard VR glasses case solution by placing the phone over the glasses case and keeping the phone screen down, and then reflected through the lens into the lens. Of course, this project ended in failure due to mass production. Now, we all know that mobile VR is to place the phone directly in front of the box and keep the phone screen facing the human eye (lens), which is relatively a direct solution. The software "3D broadcast" of Da Peng's VR was originally designed for this reflex spectacle case, and the contents are all inverted. As a result, 3D broadcasting has to be followed by an inversion correction for the mobile VR on the market.

Chen Chaoyang said: “When we started doing it, there was uncertainty and there were many solutions to optics. But which one is the right path? Now everyone knows that the right path is this way (direct type) , But at that time we didn't know. At that time we didn't know what the headline consumer version was.

Dafen VR's Cardboard VR glasses case solution was designed at the end of 2013, and Google officially announced the Google Cardboard reference design at the 2014 Google I/O Conference. I asked Chen Chaoyang whether they had understood the Google Cardboard reference design during the reflective Cardboard VR case. Chen Chaoyang did not answer me directly.

Chen Chaoyang said: “At that time, he did not expect this (Google) issue to be a standard. Later, more and more Google Cardboard products, we also realized that this program has been accepted by everyone. In doing so, we must only follow suit."

Da Peng VR's first Cardboard VR glasses case project did not escape the fate of failed production, and succumbed to Huaqiang North's Google Cardboard program. I believe this project also made Chen Chaoyang aware of the drastic changes in the market.

Chen Chaoyang said: "I think it changes every day. Every day, different vendors release new things. When the industry is not fully standardized, many things are changing at this stage."

From 2013 to 2017, the rapid changes in the market made Chen Chaoyang more and more clear and more and more pragmatic and cautious.

Chen Chaoyang said: "After 13 years of 14 years, many things are still unclear and impetuous. I am not sure what kind of form the head must be made of. The product supply chain is not perfect, and 99% of the factories have not heard of VR. I don't want to do it for you, I need to ask people to talk to the factory owner about the great prospects of a VR. Now this road is very clear, our one machine and PC head, the two product lines go down, the products do It is a king."

At the end of July, when I visited Chen Chaoyang for the second time at Da Peng VR Company, Chen Chaoyang’s first words that I said made me deeply feel his cautiousness. He said: "Weihua, do you know how Oculus's next-generation product was designed? Before you see you, there are reports that you may have a zoom head." I instantly felt that he was in the first Cardboard VR glasses case. Debris on the project.

Chen Chaoyang is very confident in his technical ability. Chen Chaoyang had previously participated in Intel's chip design for Google TV, and thus won the Intel Global Staff's highest honor of the year. Later, in Da Peng's binocular laser positioning technology, Chen Chaoyang showed his self-confidence in R&D through special details. At this year's CES Consumer Electronics Show in the United States, the internal structure design of the binocular laser base station of the Big Brother VR booth is open, allowing any interested person to understand the design of its circuit board.

Chen Chaoyang said: "At that time, Valve sent a lot of engineers to look at it. HTC came to see a lot of people. After reading it, people couldn't speak."

However, in the face of the ever-changing market, Chen Chaoyang also experienced long-term confusion and anxiety. After all, not every startup company has a local tycoon such as Facebook who has spent billions of dollars to feed. By 2015, Chen Chaoyang has begun to take further precautions against the market, so at that time, the market began to have the saying “Da Peng VR is a Chinese version of the Oculus Rift.” But one of the main reasons is that Chen Chaoyang is aware of the importance of OLED displays. Sex has become the first domestic manufacturer to adopt Samsung AMOLED displays. The persistence effect of OLED display is much smaller than LCD display, which can greatly reduce motion sickness.

Even with strong technical strength, as a startup company that is on the cutting edge and lacks resources every day, how to minimize risk and avoid mistakes is the primary principle. Therefore, today's Chen Chaoyang does not dare to fearlessly explore the shape of the next generation of products, and prefers to be a keen innovator who closely follows the development of the market.

Chen Chaoyang said: "The mistakes we make should be fewer mistakes than our peers. This is one of the reasons for us to survive. Money is limited, and you make a mistake and you lose your money. For example, in 2016, you will live domestically. A well-known company in the VR industry is not even a voice in 2017, because the mass production of the products they made in 2016 failed."

I call it a keen innovator, not a follower or imitator, because the big friend VR did not assemble other people like Huaqiangbei, but was looking at the future development. After the main direction of independent innovation research and development, such as DaPin VR's original binocular laser positioning program, but he is not the reflective reader of the Cardboard VR glasses box era.

After the exploration from 2013 to the present, the current product line of Big Brother VR has been mainly stabilized in the M series of the VR all-in-one machine, and the E-series of the head-end display on the PC.
