Yang Xu, President of Intel China: Focusing on the Internet of Things, Focusing on Eight Technical Fields

Intel, the PC chip giant, finally set its own direction in 2016, which is to transform a PC company and a company that drives cloud computing and hundreds of millions of smart and connected computing devices, and proposes the future. Focus on eight segments to make a difference.

In an interview with Phoenix Technology, Intel China President Yang Xu said that Intel achieved steady growth in the Chinese market in 2016. After nearly two years of adjustment, Intel has a clearer plan for the future direction. He said: "Intel is not afraid of making mistakes. Now the direction has been determined. The main task in the future is to implement."

Focus on eight areas such as AI and VR

In the eyes of Intel, whoever can process data efficiently in the future can get more value. "It is estimated that by 2020, there will be 50 billion devices connected to each other through the network, and these devices will generate a large amount of data traffic," Yang said. "By 2020, a person will produce 1.5GB of data every day, but if the Internet, such as hospitals, driverless cars, airplanes, smart factories, etc., the amount of data generated per day will even be one million GB. The key is To make meaningful collection of these data, to achieve industrial value-added."

Based on this, Intel has clearly defined the strategic direction for the transition to the Internet of Things. The specific implementation method is to connect the cloud and the terminal through connection technology. In this transformation, Intel also identified eight key technology areas: artificial intelligence, driverless, 5G, virtual reality, sports, robotics, precision medicine, and China Manufacturing 2025.

It can be seen from the various launch events of Intel this year that Intel has started to operate frequently in these areas, hoping to lead the entire industry by providing platforms or core technologies. In terms of artificial intelligence, Intel believes that in the future, artificial intelligence will transform the way business operations operate and how humans interact with the world, and recently launched a data center computing portfolio including software and hardware, the Intel Nervana platform. It is reported that the platform will improve the speed and ease of use of artificial intelligence applications, helping to build highly optimized artificial intelligence solutions. At the same time, Intel has established a broad alliance with the world's leading companies, and established the Intel Nervana Artificial Intelligence Committee.

Driverlessness is also one of Intel's key areas of this year. Intel has announced a partnership with BMW and Mobileye to achieve mass production of driverless cars in 2021. At this year's Intel Information Technology Summit, Intel also proposed the first "integrated reality" concept, combining AR and VR technologies, using Intel RealSense technology and the Alloy headset project, and providing an open platform for the industry. This year, Intel also established a strategic partnership with the smart hardware startup incubator to set up a robotic industry to provide a complete and open robotic industry ecosystem. 5G technology is a key to the entire Internet of Things. In addition, the sports industry, precision medicine, and China Manufacturing 2025 are also the focus of Intel's future attention.

China becomes an important market

It is worth mentioning that Yang Xu said that in the eight areas that Intel confirmed to focus on, Precision Medicine and China Manufacturing 2025 are key areas that Intel has set according to China's special circumstances. "At the Intel headquarters, the first six are talked about, but after adding these two major trends to China, they fully agree that they will become the overall force of the entire company," said Yang Xu.

Yang Xu believes that China is fast moving in precision medicine and intelligent manufacturing, and is fully open. "Hua Da Gene is researching gene sequencing and targeted drug research. The national gene bank is also entrusted to them to build, and many data are particularly important," said Yang Xu. "The concept of Made in China 2025 and German Industry 4.0 has the same effect, but German Industry 4.0 is more oriented to traditional manufacturers, and China is more emphasis on the transformation of intelligent value-added, so China has a great opportunity to lead."

For the Chinese market, Yang Xu also said that Intel will pay special attention to the special features of the Chinese market, and formulate specific strategies based on Chinese characteristics, and "see clearly" what has characteristics in China.

Yang Xu, for example, implemented his PC strategy in the Chinese market. He said that when he returned to China 20 years ago, the PC was actually a global standard product, but the Chinese market was two years behind. His strategy at the time was to replicate the global strategy. Many of the sales and marketing strategies in China were very effective, and they seized the opportunity to popularize computers in China. So in today's Intel transformation, Intel still has to see the characteristics of the Chinese market.

"My biggest feeling is that China is either a leader or a unique leader. Now that the industry has undergone such a big change, it is necessary to formulate policies and strategies for the Chinese market," Yang said.

At the same time, in this transformation of Intel, Yang Xu is also calm, Intel has completed the transformation of thinking, from a company that simply provides chips to a company that provides integrated solutions including chips, IP, algorithms and so on.

Yang Xu said that a few years ago, Intel’s thinking was still at the level of “finding chips” for terminal devices. “At that time, I wanted to find a place to get Intel chips and find out which Intel chips are available, but then I found many It’s a small device, Intel’s chip can’t do it.”

But now, Intel has figured it out, and no longer only uses chips as the sole standard of business, the solution provided will be more flexible. Yang Xu said, "It is not necessarily a chance to find a chip, especially in the direction of the Internet of Things. There may be opportunities for IP, opportunities for Intel-aware technology, and even opportunities for algorithms provided by Intel."

However, for the detours that Intel has gone through, Yang Xu also said that the important experience he has learned over the years is not to be afraid of making mistakes. "Intel's directional layout has been completed, and the next work is to verify and execute. Execution, I have never doubted it."
