2010 IC Design Industry Industry Situation Analysis

In 2010, driven by the rapid growth of the global semiconductor industry and the buoyant domestic market demand, China's integrated circuit industry also experienced few explosive growth in recent years. As a leader in the integrated circuit industry, China's IC design industry has also made encouraging development. This paper has conducted research and analysis on the industry scale, industrial distribution, product structure, and industrial technology level of the domestic IC design industry. We hope to provide first-hand materials for the majority of IC companies.

In the past 10 years, the industrial scale of domestic IC design industry has increased from 1.2 billion yuan in 2000 to 38 billion yuan in 2009, with an average annual compound growth rate of 41%. From 2000 to 2007, the domestic IC design industry continued to maintain rapid growth. Entering 2008, affected by the global financial crisis, the domestic IC design industry entered the consolidation phase, the annual growth rate was only 4%, and fell to the bottom. In 2009, the IC design industry bucked the market, with an annual growth rate of 14.8% and a scale of 38 billion yuan, which is the only positive growth in the IC industry. The proportion of China's IC design industry in the domestic IC industry has increased from 5.3% in 2000 to 24.3% in 2009, and its share of the global IC design industry has increased from 1% to 10.7%.

In 2010, driven by the strong market demand in China, China's integrated circuit industry experienced a rare explosive growth in recent years. According to the survey of 40 sampled key IC design companies across the country, most of the IC design companies’ sales increased in different degrees in 2010. The average growth rate of sales of 40 IC design companies was 58%. The fastest business growth rate is as high as 163%. China Semiconductor Industry Association integrated circuit design data show that in 2010 China's IC design industry sales are expected to reach 55 billion yuan, an increase of about 45% over 2009.

Industry Distribution According to statistics, IC design companies certified by the Ministry of Industry increased from 305 last year to 367 this year. At present, there are more than 460 IC design domestic IC design companies. According to industry experts, there are about 500 IC design companies in China, and there are about 120,000 IC designers in China.

China's IC design companies are mainly located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Bohai-Rim area, Shanghai-centered Yangtze River Delta region, Shenzhen-centered Pearl River Delta region, and other cities such as Fuzhou, Xiamen, Chengdu and Xi'an. Some IC design companies.

Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Bohai Region includes Beijing, Tianjin, Dalian, Jinan and other cities. The area is centered on Beijing and is home to many famous universities and scientific research institutes that have profound capabilities in the field of microelectronics research, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, and Tsinghua University. It is one of the most concentrated local IC design talents in China. Since 2000, many famous "Chinese cores" have been born here, such as "Godson" series, "Zhizhi" Unicore series, "Starlight" series. In terms of chip R&D, Beijing's IC design companies focus on the research and development of high-end products, but their subsequent development and industrialization are relatively weak. It is estimated that sales in the region will exceed 13 billion yuan in 2010.

The Yangtze River Delta region includes cities such as Shanghai, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing, with Shanghai as the center. The region has a good foundation, many design companies, complete industrial chain, and strong wafer foundry support, and its design level ranks among the top in the country. Among them, the Shanghai IC design industry is mainly developed with the help of overseas talents. Due to Shanghai's favorable investment environment, preferential taxation policies, and active implementation of the internationalization strategy for talents, many returnees have chosen to start businesses in Shanghai. Companies such as Spreadtrum, Geko Micro and Taiding have succeeded on the market. . It is expected that sales in the region will reach 22 billion yuan in 2010.

The Pearl River Delta region with Shenzhen as its core currently occupies nearly one-fourth of China's IC design industry, showing a trend of “three pillars” with the Bohai Sea and Yangtze River Delta regions of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei. The IC design industry in the Pearl River Delta Region has become the most successful region for domestic chip industrialization by virtue of its close proximity to the electronic machine market. Since the reform and opening up, many domestic and foreign machine companies have continuously gathered in Shenzhen and the entire Pearl River Delta to form a huge IC consumer group, which has greatly promoted the group development of Shenzhen IC design company. The electronic product manufacturing industry in the area is very developed. The huge market demand and the huge contrast caused by the very limited local supply have attracted a group of returnees to start their own businesses and stimulate the entrepreneurial passion of the Chinese people. At the same time, the entire machine manufacturers have also set up IC design departments. Or set up a company, making Shenzhen one of the fastest growing cities in the national IC design industry. It is estimated that sales in the region will reach 12.2 billion yuan in 2010.

Product Structure China's domestic companies design IC products are rich in types. From the perspective of the chip's application field, it covers many fields such as mobile terminals, network communications, digital television, computers and peripherals, automotive electronics, industrial control, security monitoring, medical electronics, and intelligent identification. 2010 is a year in which the 3G market in China is developing rapidly. The three major operators have increased their efforts to seize the 3G market, bringing with it the rapid growth of mobile Internet represented by smart phones, MIDs, tablet computers, and e-books. Domestic applications The mobile terminal IC products are also the largest, accounting for 21% of the total number of IC products, followed by network communications, accounting for 14%. Under the continuous deepening of China’s television digitization process and the strong support of the country, China’s digital TV chips are also developing rapidly. Digital TV ICs account for 7% of the total. In addition, IC products for automotive electronics, industrial control, computers, and peripherals also account for a considerable proportion. On the whole, the product structure adjustment in China's IC design industry continues to deepen, and significant progress has been made in high-end chip products. The international competitiveness of IC design companies has improved.

In addition to analyzing the industrial structure of domestic IC design industry from the application field of products, we also investigated the types of products produced by IC design companies. Among the companies surveyed, more than half of the companies with product types containing SoC chips accounted for 58.06% of the total number of enterprises. After the SoC chip, hybrid ICs and ASICs accounted for 45.16% and 38.71% respectively, ranking second and third. Survey shows that China's IC design companies generally attach importance to the research and development of SoC chips. SoC chips are currently mainstream products of IC design in China.

Semiconductor technology advances along Moore's Law, and ICs can integrate more and more complex functions onto a single chip. The SoC chip with high performance, low power consumption, low cost, and small size can effectively meet the needs of the electronic machine system for continuous development in the direction of versatility, high complexity, and miniaturization, thus becoming the current IC design technology and The mainstream of product innovation. This also poses new challenges to the design methods, tools, and processes of the IC design industry in China, including IP design and reuse technology, hardware and software co-design technologies, low-power design, measurability design, and design verification technologies. .

Industrial Technology Level According to investigations, the chip's main flow production process in China uses 0.13 micron and 0.09 micron, and the sum of the two is 55% of the survey sample enterprises. Another 15% of companies use the 65nm process. Compared with the survey in 2009, the level of technology has improved significantly. A few IC design companies have reached the international leading 40nm process.

In 2010, several major events in China's chip manufacturing industry are related to 65nm. Intel's 65nm chip factory was completed and put into operation in Dalian; the Beijing government announced that it will invest US$5.0 billion to US$6 billion to support the construction of SMIC's 300mm new plant and the development of new technologies. The plant will also use 65nm process capacity. In the short term, it will gradually expand from the current 20,000 pieces/month to 45,000 pieces/month; SMIC and IP suppliers VirageLogic and Synopsys respectively reached an IP cooperation agreement, hoping to win more market in 65nm and below process technology. Shares; IMEC and Huali Microelectronics formally signed a cooperation agreement on 65nm CMOS chip technology in May. It can be seen that 65nm technology has become a mainstream technology for domestic IC design companies in the next few years because of its mature technology, advanced technology, high yield, large output, and mature and reliable design platform.

Judging from the degree of product integration, China's IC design companies generally have a design capacity of more than one million gates, and the maximum design scale has exceeded 100 million gates. The proportion of IC companies with a design capacity of between 100 and 5 million doors has reached 33%, and the proportion of IC design companies with a design capacity of between 5 and 10 million doors and over 10 million doors has accounted for 22%. With the addition of the three, IC design companies with a design capacity of more than one million units accounted for 76% of the survey sample companies.
