[September 26 news] In the future, pop music could be created by machines.
Taryn Southern is working on a full album that is entirely generated by artificial intelligence. Her journey in the music industry had a rocky start when she was just 17 and participated in American Idol. After making it to Hollywood Week and the top 50, she was eliminated due to a memory lapse on stage. Simon Cowell famously told her, “Taryn Southern, this is embarrassing because you have a star name.â€
Thirteen years later, Southern is still far from stardom—but not in the way she once imagined. Her upcoming album will be a groundbreaking project: all music, except for her vocals, will be composed and produced using AI.
In many ways, her early setback became a stepping stone. She’s now one of the few pioneers pushing synthetic music into the mainstream, aiming to make it a serious tool for creators rather than just a novelty.
Growing up, she never received formal music training. Beyond a few piano lessons, she struggled to translate her musical ideas into actual rhythms. That’s why she turned to AI—to help bring her vision to life.
As a media anthropologist, Southern is fascinated by the intersection of society, neuroscience, and technology. She sees her new album, “I Am AI,†as a way to explore larger questions about creativity and human identity, even if it's framed through popular music.
After experimenting with AI-generated beats and systems like NSynth, she started working with more advanced platforms such as Amper AI and Jukedeck. She decided to use AI to create the entire album, relying mostly on Amper AI but also incorporating other tools.
“The future of music will be shaped by the collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence,†she says.
Drew Silverstein, co-founder and CEO of Amper AI, agrees: “We strongly believe that the future of music will be created through the cooperation of humans and artificial intelligence.â€
But not everyone is convinced. The rise of AI in music has sparked debate. Critics question whether machine-made music can truly be considered art. They argue that if a machine can do it, does it lose its authenticity?
Southern acknowledges these concerns but remains optimistic. “We’ve seen this before with every new technology. We fear it might challenge our understanding of human uniqueness, but eventually, we adapt. Think about photography—fewer people know how to develop film, but that doesn’t mean photographers are less creative.â€
To her, AI is simply another tool—an instrument that opens new doors for creativity. It empowers people without formal training to express themselves musically. “This excites me,†she says. “It’s not replacing artists, it’s expanding what’s possible.â€
