AI replaces musicians! Experts claim that the music created by AI belongs to art?

[September 26 news] The future of pop music may be shaped by machines. Taryn Southern is preparing to release an entire album created entirely by artificial intelligence, marking a bold step into the world of AI-generated music.

Southern’s journey in the music industry was not straightforward. In 2004, at just 17 years old, she participated in American Idol and made it all the way to Hollywood Week, only to be eliminated after a memorable mistake on stage—forgetting her lyrics in a moment that left her embarrassed. Simon Cowell famously told her, “Taryn Southern, this is embarrassing, because you have a star name.” That moment almost ended her career, but instead, it became a turning point.

Thirteen years later, Southern is still far from becoming a household name, but she's making waves with something much more significant: a music album that is fully composed and produced by artificial intelligence. Her upcoming project, titled “I Am AI,” is not just a creative experiment—it’s a statement about the evolving relationship between humans and technology in the arts.

Southern admits she never had formal music training beyond a few piano lessons. She struggled to translate the rhythms in her mind into actual music, which led her to explore AI as a tool for creation. “It’s not about replacing human creativity,” she explains, “but enhancing it.”

As a trade anthropologist, Southern is fascinated by the intersection of society, neuroscience, and technology. She sees her new album as a platform to explore these complex themes through the lens of popular music. “Even though it’s accessible to a wide audience, it’s also a way to raise bigger questions about art, authenticity, and the role of machines in our lives.”

Her process involved working with various AI tools like NSynth, Amper AI, and Jukedeck. While most of the tracks were created using Amper AI, she plans to include songs generated by other platforms as well. “This isn’t just about technology—it’s about collaboration,” she says. “The future of music will be shaped by the partnership between humans and machines.”

Drew Silverstein, co-founder and CEO of Amper AI, echoes this sentiment. “We believe the future of music lies in the synergy between human creativity and artificial intelligence,” he said. “It’s not about replacing artists, but empowering them.”

Of course, not everyone is convinced. Critics argue that AI-generated music lacks the soul and authenticity of human-made art. Some fear that if machines can create music, what does that mean for the value of artistic expression? Southern acknowledges these concerns but believes they are not new. “We’ve seen this before with every new technology—whether it was photography, the synthesizer, or the digital studio. At first, people feared it would devalue creativity, but over time, it expanded the possibilities.”

“Artificial intelligence is just another tool,” she adds. “It doesn’t replace the artist; it gives more people access to the creative process. It’s about opening doors for those who might not have had the chance to make music before.”

For Southern, the real question isn’t whether AI can make music—but whether we’re ready to embrace it. And if the future of music is indeed being shaped by machines, then perhaps it’s time to rethink what it means to be an artist in the digital age.
