The Berlin International Consumer Electronics Show, founded in 1924, has a history spanning almost a century and is now one of the most significant exhibitions for consumer electronics worldwide. This prestigious event serves as a platform where global tech giants showcase their latest innovations, setting the tone for future technological advancements.

From the early days of CRT televisions to modern liquid crystal displays, and now OLED and quantum dot technologies, the evolution of color TV display technology has continuously reshaped people's perceptions of visual experiences. At IFA 2017, major players in the global TV industry unveiled their latest cutting-edge technologies, offering yet another impressive showcase.
OLED vs Quantum Dots: A Tale of Two Technologies
2017 marked a pivotal moment for the television industry, as leading brands navigated critical junctures in their technological paths. At this year's IFA, TV manufacturers showcased their clear technological preferences. Companies like LG, Skyworth, Panasonic, Sony, and Philips exhibited OLED TVs, while Samsung, TCL, and Hisense emphasized their commitment to quantum dot technology.
Just before IFA commenced, TCL held a groundbreaking new product launch in Berlin, introducing the X6, C5, and P6 series equipped with artificial intelligence systems. TCL Group President Lian Lianming highlighted the company’s focus on three key areas: design aesthetics, quantum dots, and AI. TCL’s surface TVs have maintained the largest market share for two consecutive years, while its quantum dot TVs rank second globally, trailing only Samsung.

In stark contrast, Skyworth, another Chinese TV giant, has been a long-time advocate of OLED technology, launching its first OLED TV in 2013. The company has since released models such as the S9-I, S9300, S9D, and W9, and recently debuted the latest iteration, the W8. The W8 features a folding split-body design, with a 3.65mm ultra-thin OLED screen adhered to a tempered glass backboard. All components, including chips and audio systems, are integrated into the Smart Bar, complemented by a JBL sound system specifically tailored for Skyworth.

Additionally, Philips, a historical leader in the industry, showcased its latest OLED TV, integrating its renowned Ambilight technology, 4K HDR, and stereo surround sound, reinforcing its technological prowess. Meanwhile, Panasonic unveiled its new EZ1002 series, featuring LG Display’s OLED panels, equipped with Panasonic’s StudioColour HCX2 processor, and supporting ISF calibration and CALMAN software color correction for professional users.
Beyond the major players, other companies in both camps continued to demonstrate their OLED and quantum dot TV offerings. This IFA clearly highlighted the ongoing rivalry between these two technologies, with each side maintaining distinct strategies and attitudes. Undoubtedly, the competition in display technology remains fierce, with further advancements anticipated.
Artificial Intelligence Takes Center Stage
The intelligent transformation of home appliances has long been recognized as a key industry trend, driving the traditional home appliance sector toward innovation. At IFA, TCL introduced the X, C, and P series, all equipped with Baidu’s DuerOS conversational AI system. With DuerOS integration, these TVs enable voice searches, voice-controlled systems, interface navigation, playback controls, and common information queries. Jing Ye, head of Baidu’s DuerOS division, emphasized the goal of exporting Baidu’s high-quality resources and AI capabilities to industry partners, creating seamless voice interaction experiences. The collaboration between DuerOS and TCL represents a strategic alliance between AI and appliance giants, potentially transforming TV interaction and user experiences.
Similarly, Skyworth showcased Android TV smart TVs, developed in partnership with Google. These TVs offer a rich ecosystem with voice search, mobile phone casting via Chrome Cast, and extensive app support, highlighting the future of smart TVs.
The IFA 2017 underscored the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the TV industry, with many companies introducing smart speaker products and linking them to TVs. The increasing focus on AI reflects a transformative trend that is reshaping the industry landscape.
Accelerating Global Expansion
Despite challenges in domestic markets, China’s TV giants have achieved remarkable success in overseas expansion. In the first half of 2017, TCL’s revenue reached RMB 52.2 billion, with operating income up 7.9% and net profit at 1.661 billion yuan, representing a 110.8% increase. This growth was largely driven by strong overseas performance. In 2016, TCL’s overseas revenue accounted for 45.7% of total revenue, with Chairman Li Dongsheng projecting that this figure will exceed 50% in the future.
Skyworth has also aggressively expanded globally, with operations spanning Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Russia, and Australia. Since acquiring Metz in Germany in 2010, Skyworth has pursued a dual-brand strategy in Europe, establishing a research and development center to adhere to German quality standards. The company aims to become one of the top three TV brands in Europe within five years, achieving sales of 15 million units by 2020, with 50% of those being under its own brand.
Skyworth’s financial report for 2016/2017 revealed that TV product revenue from overseas markets totaled HK$8.937 billion, accounting for 71.4% of total overseas revenue, a 49.4% increase from the previous year. Sales in overseas markets exceeded 6.94 million units, a year-on-year increase of 57.5%, surpassing sales targets.
TCL and Skyworth are emblematic of China’s global ambitions in the TV industry. As evidenced by the size of their exhibition booths and the number of visitors, China’s color TV industry is becoming an increasingly formidable force internationally. With initiatives like “Made in China 2025†and the “Belt and Road†policy, China’s TV industry is poised for even greater achievements in the future.
