The Berlin International Consumer Electronics Show, originally founded in 1924, boasts nearly a century of history and stands today as one of the most significant showcases for consumer electronics worldwide. This prestigious platform has become a global stage where companies proudly present their innovations, while cutting-edge technologies guide the future trajectory of technological advancement.

From the early days of CRT televisions to the advent of liquid crystal displays, and now OLED and quantum dot technologies, advancements in color TV display technology have repeatedly redefined our perceptions. At IFA 2017, global TV giants unveiled the latest cutting-edge technologies, offering yet another spectacular feast for tech enthusiasts.
OLED vs Quantum Dots: A Continuing Debate
2017 marked a pivotal moment for the television industry, with major players at a crossroads regarding their technological paths and business strategies. At this year's IFA, it was evident that TV manufacturers had clearly defined their technical stances. Companies like LG, Skyworth, Panasonic, Sony, and Philips showcased OLED TVs, while Samsung, TCL, and Hisense emphasized their commitment to the Quantum Dot camp.
Just before IFA began, TCL held an unprecedented product launch in Berlin, unveiling the new X6, C5, and P6 series TVs equipped with artificial intelligence systems. TCL Group President and Multimedia CEO Liang Ming said that TCL focuses on three core areas: aesthetics, quantum dots, and artificial intelligence. The company's surface TVs have consistently led the market for two consecutive years, with its quantum dot market share trailing only Samsung.

In stark contrast, Skyworth, another leading Chinese TV manufacturer, debuted its first OLED TV in 2013. Since then, the company has released several OLED models including the S9-I, S9300, S9D, and W9. The latest addition to their lineup is the W8, featuring a foldable split-body design with a 3.65mm ultra-thin OLED screen adhered to a tempered glass backboard. All components, including chips and audio systems, are integrated under the screen within the Smart Bar, which also houses a specially designed JBL sound system.

Moreover, Philips, a former industry leader, presented its latest OLED TV, integrating Ambilight technology, 4K HDR capabilities, and stereo surround sound, highlighting its technological prowess. Meanwhile, Panasonic showcased its new EZ1002 series TVs, featuring LG Display's OLED panels, Panasonic's StudioColour HCX2 processor, and support for ISF calibration and CALMAN software color correction, catering to professional users.
Beyond the major players, both OLED and quantum dot TV products were showcased by various companies. Through this IFA, it's clear that competition remains fierce, with each side presenting compelling arguments. Undoubtedly, the battle over display technology continues to intensify, promising further innovation and evolution.
Artificial Intelligence Takes Center Stage
The智能化 of household appliances has long been recognized as a key trend in the industry, becoming the primary direction for traditional appliance upgrades. At the IFA, TCL introduced three series—X, C, and P—all equipped with Baidu DuerOS, enabling voice searches, system controls, interface navigation, playback adjustments, and information queries. Jing Ye, General Manager of Baidu's Escalation Division, noted that DuerOS aims to leverage Baidu's high-quality resources and AI capabilities to collaborate with industry partners, creating an unparalleled voice interaction experience. The partnership between DuerOS and TCL signifies a strategic alliance between AI giants and appliance leaders, potentially transforming TV interaction and enhancing user experiences.
Similarly, Skyworth displayed Android TV smart TVs, developed in collaboration with Google to offer a rich, feature-packed experience. These TVs support voice search, Chromecast mobile phone push, and extensive applications, illustrating future trends in smart TVs.
At this year's IFA, there was heightened interest in artificial intelligence, with many companies introducing smart speaker products and linking them to TVs. This marks a significant shift, as AI was rarely discussed in past IFAs, underscoring the unstoppable momentum of this trend.
Global Expansion Accelerates
In the first half of 2017, the color TV industry experienced an unprecedented period of growth despite general declines in performance and losses among Chinese appliance companies. TCL's revenue reached 52.2 billion yuan, with operating income increasing by 7.9% and net profit rising by 110.8%. Much of this success can be attributed to its rapid expansion in overseas markets. In 2016, TCL's overseas revenue accounted for 45.7% of total revenue, nearing half of its overall business. Chairman and CEO Li Dongsheng expects this figure to exceed 50% in the future.
Skyworth has also made deep inroads into overseas markets, operating in Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Russia, and Australia, covering three-quarters of the globe.
Since acquiring Metz in Germany in 2010, Skyworth has rapidly implemented its "Skyworth + Metz" dual-brand strategy in Europe, establishing a research and development center that adheres to German quality standards. By 2020, Skyworth aims to become one of the top three TV brands in Europe, achieving sales of 15 million units, with 50% being its own brand.
According to Skyworth's 2016/2017 financial report, TV product revenue from overseas markets reached HK$8,937 million, representing 71.4% of total overseas turnover, up 49.4% year-on-year. Overseas sales exceeded 6.94 million units, a 57.5% increase year-on-year.
TCL and Skyworth exemplify the strategic global expansion plans of China's color TV giants. With increasing participation in international exhibitions and growing numbers of visitors, China's color TV industry is emerging as a global force. As "Made in China 2025" and the "Belt and Road Initiative" continue to unfold, the future of China's color TV industry looks increasingly promising.
