Apple's decision to use OLED panels in its flagship devices highlights its strong market position and technological leadership. Historically, OLED panels have been expensive, which has limited their widespread adoption. As a result, few manufacturers have dared to incorporate them on a large scale. However, Apple’s use of this advanced technology demonstrates its confidence and ability to drive innovation.
According to *Nihon Keizai Shimbun*, Apple is actively working with multiple panel suppliers to reduce its reliance on Samsung for OLED displays. The company has shared key technologies with BOE, LG Display, and JDI, aiming to diversify its supply chain. BOE, in particular, is expected to begin mass production of OLED panels in 2019, with the Sichuan Mianyang factory set to supply components for future iPhones.
The newspaper also reported that Apple is currently in discussions with BOE to evaluate its panel technology. While it may start with smaller devices like the Apple Watch, the company could eventually integrate BOE’s OLED panels into iPhones. This move would mark a major shift in Apple’s supply strategy and could significantly impact the global display industry.
In addition to BOE, Apple has reportedly been in talks with LG Display and Japan Display Inc. (JDI). Among these, LGD appears to be making the most progress, with potential supply to Apple’s new iPhone model as early as 2018. However, full-scale production is likely to begin in 2019.
A former vice president of BOE, who was responsible for marketing, stated that the Mianyang plant is still under construction and will take over a year before mass production begins. At this time, the company has not provided further details about the timeline or scope of the project.
Market research firm IHS Markit predicts that global OLED panel shipments will rise by 53% this year, reaching $21.6 billion. The smartphone OLED market is expected to triple in the next five years, while the LCD market for mobile phones is projected to decline by 14%. This trend underscores the growing importance of OLED technology in the consumer electronics sector.
*Nikkei* also reported that BOE’s B7 plant in Chengdu, part of its sixth-generation OLED line, is set to start production this month and begin shipping in October. The facility is expected to supply local Chinese phone brands, signaling BOE’s growing role in the domestic market.
BOE has invested RMB 93 billion to build the Mianyang OLED factory, with plans to launch mass production this year. The facility aims to produce foldable OLED panels in 2019 and rollable OLEDs by 2021. These innovations could position BOE as a major player in the next generation of flexible display technology.
During a visit to the Chengdu factory, *Nikkei* reporters found that visitors were required to cover their phone lenses to prevent leaks of sensitive information. The B7 plant employs between 3,000 and 4,000 people, reflecting the scale and complexity of the operation.
BOE CEO Chen Yanshun previously expressed his goal of increasing revenue from 68.8 billion yuan in 2016 to more than 180 billion yuan by 2020. This ambitious target highlights the company’s strategic push to expand its presence in the global display market. With Apple’s support and continued investment, BOE is well-positioned to play a key role in the future of OLED technology.
