Linear Technology Releases 60V DC/DC Controller for High Current LED Applications

Linear Technology has released the LT3761 60V DC/DC controller, which is specifically designed to operate as a constant current source and constant voltage regulator. The internal PWM dimming generator makes it ideal for driving high current LEDs, but it also has features that make it suitable for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors.

The LT3761's 4.5V to 60V input voltage range is suitable for a wide range of applications including automotive, industrial and architectural lighting. The LT3761 uses an external N-channel MOSFET that can drive up to 15 1A white LEDs from a nominal 12V input, providing over 50 watts of power. It integrates high-side current sensing and can therefore be used in boost mode, buck-boost mode, buck mode or SEPIC architecture. The LT3761 provides over 94% efficiency in the boost architecture, so no external cooling is required. The frequency adjustment pin allows the user to set the frequency in the range of 100kHz and 1MHz, thus achieving maximum efficiency while minimizing external component size and cost. Combined with a thermally enhanced MSOP-16 package, the LT3761 provides a very small, high power LED driver solution.

The LT3761 features an internal PWM generator that provides up to 50:1 dimming ratio and an external PWM signal to provide up to 3000:1 dimming ratio. For less demanding dimming requirements, the CTRL pin can be used to provide a 10:1 analog dimming range. Its fixed-frequency, current-mode architecture provides stable operation over a wide range of power and output voltages, and output short-circuit protection and open-circuit LED protection for increased system reliability. The ground reference FB pin of the LT3761 can be used as an input to several LED protection functions, making the converter a constant voltage source for charging applications.

A battery pack built together with a Battery Management System with an external communication data bus is a smart battery pack. A smart battery pack must be charged by a Smart Battery Charger.
