Multimedia player function and solution analysis

Open a PMP, users will find that there are not many video content that can be played. Usually users need to use PC software to transcribe into a format that PMP can support, or use PMP to record TV content, and then use PMP to play back. This makes the use of PMP more troublesome. From In-Stat's survey report on the Chinese PMP market in 2006, we also saw that a major obstacle to PMP is the lack of easily accessible content. To solve the problem of content, the following three content resources need the support of next-generation PMP.

a. RMVB

Today's society is in an Internet era, there are many online resources, but the content of MPEG4 on the network that ordinary PMP can support is very limited. Most online video resources are in RMVB format, with resolutions ranging from 800 & TImes; 600 to 320 & TImes; 240. If PMP uses a lot of RMVB resources on the network, that is, it can play RMVB format videos, then the content of PMP is not a problem.

b.Flash

There is also a lot of resources in one format on the Internet, that is Macromedia Flash. In addition to some fun Flash movies made by some netizens, there are also some MTV Flash versions of popular songs. These Flash files generally play for a short time, allowing some people to pass the time in a short period of time, such as waiting for a car and taking a car, unlike movies or TV series that usually require a long time to watch. And many websites also provide a variety of small games with Flash. Supporting Flash means supporting the game's functions, and developers don't have to worry about game resource issues.

c. Mobile Digital TV

Last year, China's digital TV terrestrial broadcast transmission standard-GB20600-2006 "Digital TV terrestrial broadcast transmission system frame structure, channel coding and modulation" has become a national standard. Although China's national mandatory standards for mobile TV have not yet been formulated, it is undeniable that mobile digital TV will become a significant source of programming in the future, especially during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. There are already a number of provinces and cities in China piloting mobile TV. Although the content format in the mobile digital TV channel has not been stipulated, the format of the video is nothing more than MPEG2, MPEG4, H.264 or China's own video standard AVS. With the support of mobile digital TV, users can watch TV or record TV programs anytime, anywhere, and the problem of PMP content is solved.

2. Features In addition to content, the support of features is also a problem to be solved by the next generation of PMP.

a.WiFi

The time to put forward the idea of ​​supporting WiFi on PMP is not short, but what exactly does using PMP to access the Internet have become a problem for users and developers.

The support for instant messaging software may be a driving force for WiFi function support. QQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger have become an inseparable part of contemporary life. Although some smartphones can already support some instant messaging software, most of the customers of smart phones are business people, and many young people who are interested in these instant messaging software do not have such mobile phones. So it is also an important feature for portable products like PMP to support instant messaging software.

Another hotspot application of WiFi is Internet telephony. Few people on the Internet now do not know what Skype is, it allows us to make free calls with anyone who has the software on the Internet. At present, domestic Starbucks coffee shops and other places already have hotspot access to free wireless networks. It is believed that in the near future, as China's hotspots gradually increase, the voice of supporting instant messaging software and Skype and other Internet phones will increase.

b.GPS

GPS function can also add a lot to PMP. With the improvement of people's living standards, more and more people have their own cars, but the city's transportation development is also very rapid, people can not fully understand the road conditions, and the demand for GPS navigation is gradually increasing. A PMP with GPS can not only lead the way, but also enjoy music or video when it is boring, which has a lot of appeal to consumers.

Next generation PMP solution

Relative to MPEG2 / 4, RMVB, Flash, H.264, AVS and other algorithms are more complex and require higher performance for the processor. For large resolutions, such as VGA (640 & TImes; 480), D1 (720 & TImes; 480), few current PMP schemes can support H.264 or RMVB decoding. Recently, Texas Instruments (TI) launched a new TMS320DM6441 platform based on DaVinci technology (DaVinci), which is one of the good solutions for the next generation of PMP.

DM6441 is a dual-core SoC including ARM9, TMS320C64x + DSP core and video / image coprocessor. The platform is a chip developed by DaVinci technology based on portable applications, see Figure 1. ARM9 is ARM's 32-bit RISC (reduced instruction set) processing core, supports JAVA, and can support a variety of advanced operating systems, such as Linux and WinCE. The C64 + core DSP is a high-performance DSP core of TI, which can handle a large number of operations, can achieve H.264, MPEG2, MPEG4 or VC1 video performance of 30 frames per second, and can complete a larger resolution RMVB playback, and AVS algorithm. The programmability of DSP gives users flexible development, which can help developers design low-cost portable entertainment products. The video / image coprocessor complements the DSP and can accelerate and improve the performance of the algorithm.

DM6441 has video processing subsystem, including video processing front end and back end, with digital video interface, CCD / CMOS interface, preview engine, hardware scaler, support for multiple LCD screens, internal integrated video encoder and 4 DACs, support for analog Video output. DM6441 also integrates the main peripherals required by current portable media applications, including a variety of memory card interfaces (MMC / SD / SDIO / CF / MS / MS Pro), ATA hard drive interface, USB2.0 high-speed Host and Device, Ethernet support, etc.

Power consumption is a very important indicator for portable devices. DM6441 has a variety of power saving methods to enable it to meet the power consumption requirements of portable devices while providing higher performance. It has two power modes: 1.2V full speed working mode (513MHz DSP and 256MHz ARM) or 1.05V power saving working mode (405MHz DSP and 202MHz ARM). When the application does not require high processing performance, you can use the power-saving operating mode to reduce power consumption. The DM6441 also has a clock gate control function. When the internal functional modules are not in use, the clock can also be turned off. Because the power domains of the ARM and DSP cores are isolated from each other, the DSP power can be turned off when the DSP is not used, further saving power. The combination of DM6441's dual power mode, clock gating function and power domain isolation can significantly reduce power consumption. Compared with other products on the DaVinci platform such as DM6446, DM6441 can save 35% of power.

In addition to providing the DM6441 hardware platform, Texas Instruments also provides some audio and video algorithms, and cooperates with MontaVista based on the Da Vinci platform Linux. In order to bring complete and complete solutions to PMP manufacturers, TI is also committed to working with third-party developers at home and abroad. Third parties can provide more audio and video algorithms and even complete PMP reference solutions to meet the needs of various developers.

Figure 2 shows a PMP solution with DM6441 as the hardware platform. Due to the programmability and scalability of DM6441, developers can add or reduce mobile TV, WiFi, GPS and other functions as needed to meet the needs of different markets.
