I recently purchased a new router and followed the setup guide carefully. However, the router isn't connecting to the network, and the WAN port isn't receiving an IP address. This is a common issue many people face when setting up a router. In this article, I’ll walk through the possible reasons why your router’s WAN port might not be getting an IP address and how to fix it.
First, check if the cables are connected correctly. The WAN port of the router should be connected to the modem or the broadband cable. If you don’t have a modem (also known as an optical cat), simply plug the broadband cable into the router’s WAN port. Then, connect your devices like a desktop computer to any of the LAN ports using an Ethernet cable.
Another common issue is selecting the wrong internet access type during setup. Most routers offer options like Broadband Dial-up, Dynamic IP, or Static IP. Choosing the incorrect option can prevent the router from accessing the internet. For example, if you're using a broadband connection, you'll need to enter the account and password provided by your ISP. If you're on a dynamic IP setup, the computer may automatically get an IP without needing a router. For static IP, you’ll need to manually input the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings.
If everything seems correct, the problem could be with the network cable itself. Try replacing the cable that connects the modem to the router's WAN port. A faulty cable can prevent the router from obtaining an IP address.
In some cases, the ISP may have bound the MAC address of your old device. To resolve this, connect the previous device (that was working) to one of the router’s LAN ports via Ethernet. Then, log in to the router’s admin panel (usually at 192.168.0.1), go to System Settings > WAN Port Parameters, and clone the local MAC address. Save the changes and test again.
Lastly, check if there’s an issue with your home broadband. If your computer can’t connect directly to the modem, the problem might be with the service itself. Contact your ISP for further assistance.
