I recently purchased a new router and followed the installation guide to set it up. However, the router isn’t connecting to the network, and the WAN port isn’t obtaining an IP address. If you're facing a similar issue, how can you troubleshoot it on your own? Let me walk through the common causes and solutions for this problem.
One of the most common reasons the WAN port fails to get an IP address is incorrect wiring. The correct setup is to connect the router’s WAN port to the modem or directly to the broadband cable if you don’t have an optical cat. Then, connect your devices like a computer or smart TV to any of the LAN ports using an Ethernet cable.
Another possible cause is selecting the wrong internet access type during setup. There are typically three options: broadband dial-up, dynamic IP, and static IP. Choosing the wrong one can prevent the router from getting online. For example, if your ISP provides a username and password, you need to select broadband dial-up. If not, dynamic or static IP might be required.
If you’re unsure about the correct setting, contacting your service provider is always a good idea. Some routers, like the Tenda AC10, can automatically detect your broadband type, making the setup process much easier.
A faulty network cable can also cause the WAN port to fail. Check if the cable connecting the router to the modem is damaged or loose. Try replacing it with another cable to see if that resolves the issue.
Sometimes, the issue could be related to MAC address binding. If your ISP has registered the MAC address of your previous device, the router may not be recognized. To fix this, connect your old device (via Ethernet) to the router’s LAN port, log into the router’s admin panel (usually at 192.168.0.1), go to System Settings > WAN Port Parameters, and clone the MAC address of the connected device.
Lastly, the problem might be with your home broadband itself. If the router still doesn’t work after checking all settings, try connecting a computer directly to the modem or broadband cable. If the computer can’t access the internet either, then the issue is likely with your ISP.
To test this, disconnect the router and plug your computer directly into the modem. Open the "Broadband Connection" program, enter your account and password, and try dialing in. If it works, the router is the problem. If not, contact your service provider for further assistance.
Tip: If you see a “691†error when dialing in, it means there’s a mismatch in your broadband login details. Double-check your username and password. If you’ve forgotten them, call your ISP for help.
If you have fiber-optic broadband without a username and password, simply connecting the cable to your computer should allow it to access the internet directly.
