December 12 news, according to foreign media reports, patent licensing company Wi-Lan announced that it has filed a lawsuit against BlackBerry maker RIM, accusing it of infringing one of its Bluetooth technology-related patents. Wi-Lan said that it filed a lawsuit against RIM in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Wi-Lan licensed its intellectual property to 255 companies worldwide. It accused RIM of infringing U.S. Patent No. 6260168, which relates to Bluetooth technology.
Wi-Lan filed a series of patent litigations, including an LTE-related lawsuit filed last week against Apple, HTC, and Sierra Wireless USA.
Wi-Lan pointed out in the indictment that RIM's Playbook tablet and many smart phones, including Bold, Torch, Pearl Storm, etc., use technology that infringes on its patents.
A RIM spokesman said: "RIM will actively defend its own interests."
Wi-Lan also filed an undetermined number of claims in the case, and asked the judge to issue temporary and permanent injunctions against RIM's infringing products.
Wi-Lan also said on Tuesday that the U.S. Court of Appeal of the Federal Circuit upheld the lower court's decision. Wi-Lan filed a patent infringement lawsuit against South Korea’s LG Electronics in March this year.
It accused LG of infringing on one of its V-chip technologies. LG's service can help parents turn off TV shows that they think are inappropriate.
The company said: "Wi-Lan was surprised and disappointed with this decision. Wi-Lan is currently discussing legal options with various legal solutions."
Wi-Lan shares fell 6% in afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange to fall to $4.53 per share.
