BroadLink brought the concept of artificial intelligence to the smart home industry. The question is how to do it?

In 2013, BroadLink established and launched smart home products such as smart sockets and smart remote control. It is one of the earliest companies to make smart home products in China.

In 2014, BroadLink cooperated with Xiaomi (in July of the same year, the two parties broke up) and released a DNA plan, which gradually turned into a solution and platform service provider;

At the "Smarter&Together" theme conference held last year, CEO Liu Zongru emphasized the development strategy of BroadLink: WiFi module + cloud service + APP package service;

Yesterday, Liu Zongru set a small goal for BroadLink - to combine home and artificial intelligence, which BroadLink called the Internet of Virtual Things (IoVT) world.

This is the three-year development track of BroadLink, from single product to ecology to artificial intelligence. Regardless of BroadLink's achievements in recent years, this is a best growth for any early-born smart home companies. Route it.

IoT's final form: IoVT

"To do this in the Internet of Things industry, we must do something like this. The future of the IoT system is to have an artificial intelligence brain in the virtual world (IoVT) to control the equipment, not the App," Liu Zongru said.

As for how to define IoVT in the end, he explained this way: IoVT is the integration of the physical world and the digital world. The physical world is the real world of our lives, and the Internet or the mobile Internet belongs to the virtual world. This is an abstract explanation. More generally, IoVT is an extension of IoT.

In Liu Zongru's view, IoT (Internet of Things) can be divided into three stages, and IoVT is the final form.

The first stage is "IoT-Intelligent Hardware Age". Devices connect from the physical world to the digital world through the networking module, and then return to the physical world. The smart phone achieves one-to-one control.

The second stage is the "IoT-interconnection era". As more and more equipment categories are connected to the digital world, users need super APPs to centrally control equipment of different brands and different brands, between devices and between data. Interconnection and intercommunication, realizing scenario control and linkage control between devices;

The third stage is “IoVT-the age of virtual world”. Devices entering the digital world will not directly connect to our smart terminals. They will stay in the digital world in the form of virtual devices. Virtual devices can be freely combined into one big one. Virtual device. Including, the human body can also be abstracted into a VT virtual object. We humans also have their own attributes and parameters. By defining humans, we can bring human emotions into the digital world and combine them with other virtual objects. This is the virtual world we are building. We believe this is the future of humanity and the future of the Internet of Things.

At the press conference, BroadLink released a signal to the outside world that the third phase is its next goal.

The question is, how does the home work with artificial intelligence?

Since 2014, BroadLink has positioned itself as a platform provider. It does not even have to do any smart terminals. These are provided by home appliance manufacturers such as TCL, Galanz and Midea. The work of Unicom between devices has also been handed over to Jingdong Micro. United, Haier U+ and so on.

How to make these devices artificial intelligence? this is a problem.

According to Australia’s director of artificial intelligence and Professor Zhang Chengqi of the University of Science and Technology in Sydney , smart home devices can become smarter through cloud computing and big data analytics.

According to conventional logic, this series of tasks is not directly related to BroadLink. How does it intervene?

Liu Zongru told Lei Fengwang (search for "Lei Feng Net" public concern) that "BroadLink will not establish its own team to involve itself in the technical work of artificial intelligence, but will also choose to collaborate with companies and colleges and universities in addition to providing standardized data."

BroadLink has already cooperated with the science and technology of Microsoft's Science and Technology and Microsoft's Xiaobing team. These professional teams basically cover face recognition, speech recognition, and semantic analysis. How do these data information come back and how do they work? Analysis of user equipment usage habits, doing countdown mining and analysis by the University of Technology’s research team.

In a nutshell, BroadLink did three things: providing data, finding artificial intelligence companies, and research teams at UTS.

The data needed for deep learning comes from the equipment connected to BroadLink. According to official data, the market share of BroadLink in the first half of the year is 20%. At the end of this year, 200 home appliance manufacturers will access the platform. In Liu Zongru's view , the data generated by these devices is the key to artificial intelligence companies and research institutions willing to cooperate with BroadLink.

In addition, BroadLink will also work with UTS to prepare for the establishment of the China-Australia Joint Laboratory, which will focus on research on big data, deep learning and artificial intelligence.

BroadLink will invest a sum of money as a scholarship. UTS will use these scholarships to recruit doctoral students in China. The topics of these doctoral students will focus on the direction of BroadLink Smart Home. After the research, the intellectual property rights belong to BroadLink. BroadLink can also make good use of it. The productization of the project is expected to jointly train 10 PhDs each year.

After this work is done, nearly 200 terminal equipment partners of BroadLink can directly use this data to create smarter devices, or as artificial intelligence terminals.

to sum up

When artificial intelligence was the most popular, BroadLink brought the concept of artificial intelligence to the field of smart homes, which may bring some positive energy to the smart home industry that is gradually quiet and faced with shuffling. However, artificial intelligence is a technology that requires a large amount of capital investment over a long period of time. The risks are also obvious. BroadLink wants to make more breakthroughs and it will take time.
