The Ethan D1 smart projector, the first in our "Out of the Box" series, showcased its impressive capabilities in the initial article titled "Audio Entertainment Almighty Warrior – Teach You to Play Fundan D1 Smart Projection." In that piece, we introduced the D1's user interface, entertainment resources, and basic app extensions. Today, we dive deeper into the evaluation of its hardware specifications, core performance, audio and video decoding abilities, and projection quality.
Let’s start with the hardware details:

According to CPU-Z measurements, the D1 is powered by a Mstar 6A928 processor, paired with a Mali-760 MP4 GPU. It features 3GB DDR3 RAM, 16GB EMMC storage, and a 1.2x optical zoom lens with high-transmittance coating. The projection ratio is 1.25–1.37:1, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. It uses 3LCD technology, offering a resolution of 1920x1200, brightness of 1000 ANSI lumens, and a contrast ratio of 3001–5000:1.
The Nenamark2 benchmark results were slightly lower than expected, but still acceptable for most applications. However, the D1 excels in audio decoding, supporting a wide range of formats including DTS. Its video decoding capabilities are also strong, handling 4K, H.265, and even some 3D content smoothly. One area where it falls short is HDR support, which may be addressed through future firmware updates as HDR becomes more common in 4K content.

The 3LCD technology used in the D1 significantly enhances image quality compared to traditional DLP projectors. By splitting light into red, green, and blue components, it produces brighter, more vibrant images with less color break-up (the rainbow effect). This makes for a more comfortable viewing experience over long periods.
However, this technology also increases the size of the optical engine, making the D1 larger than typical DLP-based projectors. For home users who prioritize picture quality over portability, this trade-off is well worth it. Those who value mobility may prefer smaller models, but for audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts, the D1 is an excellent choice.

In terms of noise, the D1 has a slightly higher fan volume due to its compact air duct design. However, at a distance of one meter, the noise level remains below 28 dB, which is generally unobtrusive during normal use.
With a brightness of 1000 ANSI lumens, the D1 performs well in dimly lit environments. Below are real-world images of 4K content displayed on a 100-inch 16:10 fiberglass screen from about 2.5 meters away. These shots were not edited or compressed, showing the true output of the D1.

The clarity of facial details and skin textures is remarkable, and the colors remain rich and natural. The contrast is excellent, especially in scenes like a sunny beach, where the lighting appears lifelike.

The D1 also supports a variety of text formats via the WPS Office system, making it ideal for presentations. The sharpness of text and edges is impressive, reducing jagged lines effectively.

In addition to Mango TV, the D1 also supports IQIYI streaming services, providing users with access to a broader range of online content.

While the D1 performs well in dark environments, its image quality may degrade in bright rooms with direct light. Users are advised to use blackout curtains or choose a white wall for projection to optimize the viewing experience.

One unique feature of the D1 is its lack of built-in speakers, instead offering multiple audio interfaces for connecting external sound systems. This allows users to build their own home theater setups, ensuring both superior video and audio quality. Even when using Bluetooth devices like a Harman Kardon speaker, the synchronization between audio and video was seamless, with no noticeable lag.
Overall, the D1 is a high-end smart projector with excellent image quality, strong decoding capabilities, and a versatile setup. Priced at 5999 yuan, it is ideal for users seeking a premium home theater experience. Whether you're an audiophile or simply looking for a powerful projector for your living room, the D1 is definitely worth considering.
