Supercomputing and Cloud Computing As discussed earlier, cloud computing is a business model that delivers scalable and flexible services over the Internet, allowing users to pay only for what they use. It introduces a new value proposition by enabling companies to offer highly scalable and adaptable internet-based services. With SaaS (Software as a Service), users can access thin-client applications, reducing the cost of software purchases and maintenance. All features are delivered as a service, making it easy for users to access and manage their digital needs. Cloud computing evolved from grid computing, offering on-demand resource allocation. While grid computing can exist within a cloud environment, it’s not always the case. The focus varies depending on the user. For system administrators and integrators, the concern is maintaining the cloud infrastructure — including server upgrades, installations, and virtualization. However, for end-users, the inner workings of the system are irrelevant; they simply need access to the services provided. Both grid computing and cloud computing share many similarities. They are both derived from the concept of distributed computing, aiming to make IT resources more transparent and efficient for users. The emergence of web services has further enhanced this idea, allowing companies to deploy thousands of servers to create massive computing power. This enables new services that were previously unattainable. Individuals and businesses can now leverage the computing resources of large network providers to run applications or offer services online. This evolution represents the historical shift from grid computing to cloud computing. The significance of both lies in their ability to allow users and developers to access data or perform complex calculations through the Internet. Even with limited local resources, users can carry out sophisticated tasks via the network. In this way, cloud and grid computing bring the power of the Internet to everyday users, much like how electricity is used in homes.
