With the release of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple has been rolling out the latest iOS 11 update to compatible devices. It's likely that many users have already upgraded to the new system. I recently upgraded my iPhone 7 to iOS 11, and the new iPhone 8 I bought comes with iOS 11 pre-installed. After using it for a couple of days, I found several new features quite useful, which is why I'm sharing this hands-on review today.
One of the most anticipated features in iOS 11 was screen recording. I've always wished for this function on my iPhone, as it would make testing apps or capturing app behavior so much easier. Now, finally, iOS 11 includes a built-in screen recorder.
To enable it: Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. If it's your first time, scroll down and tap the "+" next to "Screen Recording."
Once added, you can access it from the Control Center. For example, if you're watching a live stream and want to record it, you no longer need a second phone to capture the screen. Just swipe up to open the Control Center, tap "Screen Recording," wait for the countdown (3-2-1), and the recording starts automatically.
To stop the recording, tap the red status bar at the top of the screen. The video will be saved in your Photos app, just like any other video you’ve taken. It’s incredibly simple and effective!
My Test Results:
If you have an app that plays audio while recording, the final video will include sound. However, if no such app is running during the recording, the video will be silent. This is something to keep in mind depending on what you're recording.
This screen recording feature alone makes the upgrade to iOS 11 worthwhile. I’m really happy with the update—do you agree?
iOS 11 Camera Filters
Another great feature in iOS 11 is the improved camera filters. I tested them after the update, and they look really good! To use them, open the Camera app and tap the three overlapping circles in the upper-right corner.
The system offers various filter options: Bright, Fresh Warm, Cool, Contrast, Contrast Warm, Cold, Monochrome, Silver Tone, and Black & White.
Last weekend, I visited West Lake and took some photos. The weather wasn't ideal, so I used the Silver Tone filter to enhance a few shots. My photography skills are still basic, but I felt these images turned out pretty well. Feel free to leave a comment below and share your thoughts!

No Internet Access for Some Apps?
After updating to iOS 11 or getting a new iPhone 8/8 Plus, you might find that some apps can’t access the internet. Don’t worry—it’s not a problem with your device. It’s actually a new privacy feature in iOS 11 that requires apps to ask for permission before accessing the network.
There are three options: Always Allow, While Using the App, and Never. Some users may accidentally choose “Never†and later find their app doesn’t work properly.
How to Fix It:
- When installing a new app, make sure to read the permission prompts carefully.
- If you’ve accidentally denied an app’s internet access, go to Settings > Cellular Data > Find the app > Toggle it on.
Today, I shared a few interesting features of iOS 11 based on my personal experience. There are definitely more hidden gems waiting to be discovered. If you’ve found anything cool, feel free to leave a comment and share your findings. Sharing is part of the fun!
