Handlebar | The latest Apple iOS 11 "Hidden new features"

With the release of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple has been rolling out the latest iOS 11 update to all compatible devices. It’s likely that many users have already upgraded, including myself, who recently updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 11. The new iPhone 8 comes with iOS 11 pre-installed, and after a few days of testing, I found several new features really useful. That’s why I’m excited to share this hands-on review of iOS 11.

One of the most anticipated features in iOS 11 is the screen recording function. I’ve always wanted this feature for testing apps or capturing interesting moments on my phone. Now, it's finally here! Here's how to enable it:

Go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. If you're using it for the first time, scroll down and tap the "+" next to "Screen Recording" to add it to your control center.

Once added, you can access it from the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. Tap the Screen Recording button, wait for the 3-2-1 countdown, and the recording starts automatically. To stop it, just tap the red status bar at the top of the screen. The video will be saved in your Photos app, just like any other video you take.

During my test, I found that if you’re recording while using an app that plays audio (like a video or music app), the sound is captured along with the video. However, if no such app is running, the recording will be silent. This is something to keep in mind when using the feature.

Another great addition in iOS 11 is the improved camera filters. These filters are easy to access—just open the Camera app and tap the three overlapping circles in the top right corner. The available options include Bright, Fresh Warm, Cool, Contrast, Contrast Warm, Cold, Monochrome, Silver Tone, and Black & White.

I tried some of these filters during a weekend trip to West Lake. The weather wasn’t ideal, so I used the Silver Tone filter to enhance a few photos. Even though I’m not a professional photographer, I was happy with the results. Feel free to check out the images below and leave a comment!

One thing to note: After updating to iOS 11 or getting a new iPhone 8/8 Plus, some apps may not work properly until you grant them network access. This is a new privacy feature in iOS 11 that requires user permission for each app. When you first open an app, you might see a prompt asking whether you want to allow it to use the internet. If you accidentally say “No,” don’t worry—you can fix it in the Settings app under Cellular Data.

So, that’s a quick look at some of the exciting new features in iOS 11. There are definitely more hidden gems waiting to be discovered. If you’ve found anything interesting, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. Sharing experiences is what makes tech fun!
