According to Sina Technology News, on the evening of January 25th Beijing time, IDC released preliminary data showing that PC shipments in the Asia-Pacific region (including Japan) totaled 107 million units in 2015, marking a 7.7% decline compared to the previous year. This was a sharper drop than the 5.7% decline recorded in 2014. In the fourth quarter of 2015 alone, shipments reached 26.9 million units, down 6.5% from the same period the prior year.
IDC's report noted that while large-scale education initiatives in India and Thailand helped boost PC sales in the region, the slowdown in China’s economic growth significantly impacted overall shipments. The decline in China’s manufacturing, construction, and mining sectors affected business IT spending. Additionally, the sluggish retail environment led Chinese consumers to prioritize spending on smartphones over PCs.
Indonesia’s PC market also experienced a downturn, primarily due to reduced government IT spending and high inventory levels in consumer channels. Meanwhile, the Japanese market faced challenges due to high inventory levels and fluctuations in the yen. Macick Gornicki, IDC’s Asia Pacific client equipment research manager, stated that the region’s PC industry is expected to remain challenging this year, as many countries may continue to reduce IT budgets amid an uncertain economic outlook.
Despite these challenges, Lenovo remained the largest PC vendor in the Asia-Pacific region in 2015. Although it faced a decline in the domestic market, the company gained market share in the education sectors of India and Thailand. It also performed well in the Australian and New Zealand consumer markets.
Dell maintained its second position, driven by strong corporate market shipments. Hewlett-Packard ranked third, with solid performance in China’s public sector and increased presence in the education markets of India and Thailand. ASUS moved up to fourth place, surpassing Acer, thanks to strong performances in mainland China and Indonesia.
In the fourth quarter of 2015, Lenovo captured 30.7% of the Asia-Pacific PC market, followed by Dell at 11.4%, HP at 11%, Asus at 7.4%, and Acer at 6.3%. These figures reflect the competitive landscape and shifting dynamics in the region’s PC industry.
