In the realm of technology, a recent report from IDC has shed light on the performance of the PC market in the Asia-Pacific region during 2015. According to the data released, total PC shipments in the region, which includes Japan, reached 107 million units, marking a significant decline of 7.7% compared to the previous year. This is a sharper drop than the 5.7% decline recorded in 2014. The fourth quarter of 2015 saw 26.9 million units shipped, a decrease of 6.5% year-on-year.
Despite some positive developments, such as increased PC sales driven by large-scale education initiatives in India and Thailand, the overall market faced challenges. China's slowing economic growth had a noticeable impact, with reduced spending on business IT due to downturns in manufacturing, construction, and mining sectors. Additionally, Chinese consumers increasingly prioritized smartphones over PCs, further contributing to the decline.
Indonesia's PC market also experienced a downturn, largely due to reduced government IT spending and high inventory levels in consumer channels. Meanwhile, Japan's market suffered from sluggish demand, exacerbated by high inventory levels and fluctuations in the yen.
Macick Gornicki, a research manager at IDC for client equipment in the Asia-Pacific region, noted that the industry is expected to remain challenging in the coming year. He pointed out that many countries are likely to continue cutting back on IT spending due to an uncertain economic outlook.
In terms of market leaders, Lenovo remained the top PC vendor in the Asia-Pacific region in 2015. Although it faced challenges in its domestic market, Lenovo made significant gains in the education sectors of India and Thailand, as well as in the consumer markets of Australia and New Zealand. Dell maintained its position as the second-largest seller, with strong performance in the corporate sector. HP came in third, showing robust growth in China’s public sector and gaining ground in the education markets of India and Thailand.
ASUS moved up to fourth place, surpassing Acer, thanks to strong performances in mainland China and Indonesia. In the fourth quarter of 2015, Lenovo captured 30.7% of the market share, followed by Dell at 11.4%, HP at 11%, ASUS at 7.4%, and Acer at 6.3%.
These figures highlight the ongoing shifts and challenges within the PC industry in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting broader economic trends and changing consumer preferences.
