[Literacy stickers] Knowledge about the brightness of smart projectors

When buying a smart projector, brightness is one of the most important factors to consider. The higher the brightness, the better the image quality under the same lighting conditions. Many modern smart projectors now have brightness levels exceeding 1000 ANSI lumens, which is significantly higher than traditional projectors. For home use, this level of brightness is more than sufficient and offers excellent performance in most environments.

Understanding Projector Brightness
ANSI Lumens: This is the standard unit used to measure a projector’s brightness. It refers to the amount of light emitted by the projector.
The measurement process involves:
1. Placing the projector 2.4 meters away from the screen.
2. Using a 60-inch screen.
3. Measuring the illuminance at nine points arranged in a "T" shape on the screen using an illuminance meter.
4. Calculating the average of these nine readings and multiplying it by the screen area to get the ANSI lumen value.

ANSI Lumen 9-Point Test
ISO Lumens: This is another standard for measuring brightness, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It provides more detailed testing procedures compared to ANSI. While ANSI standards are more common in Europe and the U.S., ISO measurements are becoming increasingly popular among Japanese manufacturers as well.
Challenges with Projector Brightness
Traditional projectors typically have large bodies and high-pressure lamps that produce high brightness but also consume a lot of power and generate significant heat. This requires ample space for cooling, making them less portable.
In contrast, modern micro-projectors usually use LED light sources. Although LEDs are energy-efficient and long-lasting, they tend to be less bright than traditional lamps. Since LED light sources are spread out, their concentration is lower, resulting in lower brightness. However, current micro-projectors can now reach thousands of lumens, and their size has gradually increased to accommodate this improvement.

The size of the imaging chip not only affects resolution but also plays a role in brightness. As shown in the table above, the 0.45-inch chip is currently the most popular choice for high-end micro-projectors, offering a resolution of 1280×800. A projector with this chip typically costs around 3,000 yuan.
What About Ultra-High Brightness?
Although today's micro-projectors offer impressive brightness, they still perform best when used in dimly lit rooms. In bright environments, the difference between 200 and 1000 ANSI lumens may not be very noticeable. However, in low-light settings, higher brightness makes a significant difference in image clarity and overall viewing experience.
