In the Super Bowl midfield show by Lady Gaga earlier this year, 300 Intel Shooting Star drones lit up the night sky behind her, and the scene was spectacular. However, it is not an easy task to accurately control hundreds of drones through a computer. On Tuesday, Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo announced a lightweight drone solution that looks like a very good one.
NTT Docomo said the drone is the world's first spherical lighting drone. Structurally, it consists of a spherical outer frame and an inner LED frame with eight bendable LED strips extending from the top to the bottom.
The spherical frame has a diameter of about 88 cm (about 34.5 inches) and the entire unit equipped with a drone weighs only 3.4 kg. The LED display has a resolution of 144 136 and is a two-armed drone that protrudes from the bottom.
In flight, the LED frame rotates rapidly, creating an illusion of a solid-state image. According to NTT Docomo, drones are highly maneuverable and can be operated from almost anywhere, such as displaying advertisements in concert halls or on stage, or even as part of a show.
