Autonomous vehicles, head-up displays (HUD), hybrid electric powertrains... The current dynamic list of exciting and changing game rules in the automotive industry is surprising.
After more than a century after the introduction of Model T, innovation continued to accelerate. But some things haven't changed, especially when it comes to the driver's expectations for interior and exterior comfort and visibility.
That's why I want to praise Texas Instruments for many interesting advances in automotive body electronics and lighting. From the appearance of the vehicle to how the driver sees the cockpit with the interior lights, this is a very good time for car manufacturers and their customers.
LED is changing all cars
There is currently a trend to switch from incandescent and HID lamps to LED lighting. This conversion means that car manufacturers can use LEDs to produce the same amount of light while consuming less energy than older devices.
In addition to improving efficiency, the more diverse form factor of LED lighting also brings new Creativity to vehicle stylists, where lighting can be placed in, in and out of the car. I have seen some fantastic experiments with new vehicle exterior styling because new and unique headlights and taillights may be configured with LEDs.
The same LED technology driven by our TI solution family also helps our customers implement adaptive front light systems (AFS) to improve visibility in very dark environments.
Enhance the ride experience
There are many interesting apps for driver comfort and convenience. For example, the Bluetooth® low-energy solution uses the app on the driver's smartphone to engage interior comfort features such as cabin temperature, ambient light color and seat position.
Through the app, the driver can easily customize the car interior by adjusting such things as seat position, environment settings, custom interior lighting and favorite music preferences. The same smartphone app can use BLE as a more convenient way for drivers to unlock and start their vehicles.
Support the future of automotive body electronics and lighting
Our work at TI will continue to help our partners strive to meet and exceed customer expectations. We are now busy creating a range of LED lighting control solutions, including linear LED drivers, switch LED drivers and LED matrix managers.
We also offer current shunt monitors and temperature sensors to help customers develop fault diagnosis and protection solutions in lighting applications. TI is also developing a DLP solution that allows customers to implement high-resolution AFS systems and automotive BLE solutions.
