LCD TV with large-size panel Q1 revenue decline 12%

Market research agency Displaysearch released the latest large-size panel shipment report. In the first quarter, global shipments of 9.1-inch LCD panels totaled 164 million units, which was 7% lower than the previous quarter; and revenue of $17.5 billion was also relatively low. Declined by 12% in the previous quarter. According to Xie Qinyi, vice president of DisplaySearch Greater China, the bottom panel prices will gradually stabilise this season, and it is expected that 18% of shipments will rebound.

Although tablet PCs were seen as the next big hit, panel shipments of tablet PCs and notebook PCs both decreased by 7% this quarter, LCD TVs plunged by 13%, and LCD monitors dropped by 5%; The monitor panel shipped flat. The decline in shipments of tablet computers was due to the limitations of components and production factors. Taking the 9.7-inch panel as an example, the shipment volume in the fourth quarter of last year was 8.2 million units, which fell to 7.4 million units in the first quarter of this year. However, tablet PCs have high gross margins, and revenue figures are still growing compared to last year. LCD TVs are the worst performing products in all applications.

According to the latest DisplaySearch report, the reasons for the panel's growth include low levels from the inventory level and a gradual recovery in capacity utilization. The oversupply of this wave in the past took too long, mainly due to the excessive shipment of TV panels in the second half of last year. However, the situation began to change at the end of March. The first to adjust upward in terms of prices was the mainstream size products, which drove downstream brands to become sensitive to supply. The panel season growth in the second quarter of this year was estimated at 18%. However, sensitive supply does not guarantee the continuous growth of orders, and whether the continued recovery in the second half of the year will depend on the follow-up situation.

As for the revenue rankings of the various brands, LG Display continued to maintain a 25.9% revenue share of its total revenue, while slightly higher Samsung Electronics ranked second with 25.6%. Both AUO and Chi Mei had a higher revenue share in the first quarter of this year, AUO grew from 15.1% to 16.5%, Chimei grew from 14.1% to 15.6%, and Sharp declined to rank fifth.
