The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is currently facing three major challenges in supporting the development of the OLED industry

The 2011 China Display Technology Development Summit Forum was held in Hefei yesterday. According to Zhou Zixue, chief economist of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the flat panel display industry has a high technological content, a large market size, a large industrial radiation, and obvious benefits. It is important to develop the flat panel display industry to enhance the core competitiveness of China's electronic information industry and promote the transformation and upgrading of industrial structures. significance. As an industry authority, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will strongly support the development of the flat panel display industry.

Flat panel display industry accelerates development

Zhou Zixue pointed out that with the "Electronic Information Industry Adjustment and Revitalization Plan" and "2010-2012 flat panel display industry development plan" and other policies, China's flat panel display industry has shown a trend of accelerated development.

According to statistics, at present, two domestic six-generation lines including the 6th generation BOE Hefei line and the 6th generation panda line of the Chinese panda have been completed and put into production. The relevant state departments have approved three 8.5 generations in Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and two 7.5-generation high-generation LCD panel production lines in Kunshan and Suzhou.

TCL Group also just announced that it will invest 100 million U.S. dollars to participate in the panel project of Suzhou Samsung LCD Display Technology Co., Ltd., and hold 10% of the shares of Suzhou Samsung; thus it has a partial stake in its 7.5-generation LCD panel line. At the same time, TCL Holdings's 8.5-generation line of China Star Optoelectronics is expected to be put into operation within the year. Domestic shows that leading and complete machine companies have entered the field of liquid crystal display through the form of acquisition technology or joint venture companies.

However, the high-level lineup projects were launched at the same time, but also caused the industry's concern over the 2012 LCD panel overcapacity. According to Zhang Bing, director of market research for DisplaySearch China, the net profit of panel makers has actually been declining gradually this year, from more than 20% to 7%, the situation of second and third-tier panel makers is even worse, they are through the introduction of new Technology, new strategies and new business models to protect margins.

OLED is becoming an industry hotspot
Chinese companies have also noticed this issue. According to Wang Baoping, vice president of Southeast University, the Electronic Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology last year launched a "research project on the future development of display technology." It is expected that the strategic research report will be completed in May this year for the government's decision-making reference.

Wang Baoping said that the study found that national governments' autonomous plans for the new display industries have fallen on OLEDs, which is becoming a hot spot in the industry. He pointed out that in the next 10-20 years, liquid crystal display may still occupy the mainstream position for a long time, but new display technologies including OLED, touch screen, laser projection, etc. will also occupy a certain share.

At present, listed companies such as Shenzhen Tianma, Changhong, and BOE have already possessed certain technical reserves. According to insiders from BOE, the actual rate of equipment and processes from LCD panels to OLED production exceeds 70%, which means that today's leading LCD panel technology also has the advantage of being able to transform and develop OLEDs.

Zhou Zixue also revealed that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will also attach great importance to the development of new display technologies, pay close attention to the development of technology, advance the deployment of future display technology research, promote industrialization in a timely manner, and strive to achieve China's flat panel display industry from the follow-up development to lead-style development across.

In addition, he also stated that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will also enhance the capacity for independent innovation, encourage enterprises to increase input, concentrate resources on the core technologies that restrict the development of the industry, and improve the industrial chain, speed up the construction of panel projects to speed up glass substrates, color filters, polarized light The R&D and industrialization of large-scale supporting materials, such as films, and the increase of local supply ratios, as always, support the development of the flat panel display industry.

Three major challenges to development
However, the current domestic OLED development in the face of opportunities, the face of the adjustment from the technology and the market is not small, according to the kick to see the following three aspects:

First of all, in terms of technology, the yield of OLED panels is too low. It is understood that the yield of large-size OLED panels currently being put into production is less than 30%, and the yield of LCD panels can reach over 99%.

Secondly, the OLED industry needs huge investments. It is not difficult for one or two companies to complete. OLED is a technology-funded industry, and it is also a cutting-edge technology in the information industry. It requires the relevant national departments to take a strategic approach to overall planning of the OLED industry and to pool resources. Strengthen independent innovation, guide and encourage enterprises to join the OLED industry chain and give financial support to form a sustainable development capability.

Finally, it is a cost issue because OLEDs are current-type devices that require relatively high current drive and therefore require an LTPS TFT substrate. LTPS is destined to keep the cost of OLEDs high. The current OLED display mainly focuses on the small and medium size, while the OLED pixel distribution number is not high, so the OLED is suitable for a slightly larger size, but the size is too large and the cost advantage is even worse.

Despite this, the industry is still very optimistic about the prospects of OLED panels, Zhang Bing, DisplaySearch research director said: "Although OLED TV is difficult to mass production, but by 2013, Samsung will mass production of 8 generation OLED lines, large-size OLED TV will gradually go Nearly consumers. It is expected that OLED TV will gradually become popular after 2015.” Zhang Bing believes that OLED TV is the future development direction.

In particular, there is a difference between the previous ones and the old ones. According to financial circles, the main demand for the 8.5-generation plant in the southern part of the country will be expanded. Despite the earthquake disaster in Japan, bankers pointed out that the expansion of New Chimei is aimed at China. The expansion of domestic demand in the mainland market is not affected by the earthquake in Japan.
