Marvell Introduces Industry's First Single-Chip Dual Channel Dimmable LED Lighting Driver Chip

May 24, 2011, Beijing ── global leader in integrated silicon solutions happy Electronic Technology (Marvell) today announced the world's first dual-channel intelligent LED driver IC 88EM8801. The chip uses Marvell's unique power supply technology and leverages the company's deep integration in advanced integration and advanced mixed-signal technology to integrate high-end lighting functions that previously required multiple driver chips, microcontrollers and many discrete components. Go to a single chip. Marvell's new 88EM8801 driver chip is small in size and features on-chip intelligent digital control to help customers easily apply high-end lighting and control functions to mainstream professional and consumer lighting products such as downlights, Zhaga-compatible LED modules, and PAR Lights, AR lights, A19 and MR bulbs.

The 88EM8801 is the first product in the new Marvell 8800 series of LED lighting driver chips. The product line features intelligent digital control that dramatically reduces system design complexity and reduces the engineering effort required to achieve high-end lighting. With a unique current adjustment function, the new 8800 Series can reduce system cost by using lower binning LEDs, but maintains consistent luminous flux and color temperature throughout the LED luminaire manufacturing process and throughout the long life cycle. In addition, the 8800 Series offers up to 0.1% deep dimming with intelligent pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming control circuitry and other digital dimming control mechanisms.

In addition to reducing the size of LED driver circuits, reducing design complexity and cost, the intelligent 88EM8801 reduces LED component overhead while delivering high quality light output, which typically accounts for 60% of the total cost of LED bulbs. With Marvell's dual-channel drive technology, the 88EM8801 offers an excellent solution for mixing and controlling LEDs of different colors for high color rendering index (CRI) and lumens per watt. What's more, the 8801 solution delivers up to 95% efficiency while also providing an on-chip wireless lighting control communication interface.

Marvell has now begun offering samples and evaluation boards for the 88EM8801 to major OEMs.

introduction:

"Marvell's new 8800 LED driver chip family will significantly reduce the cost of implementing high-quality professional and consumer lighting LED technology and accelerate the large-scale market application of sustainable LED solutions," said Kishore Manghnani, vice president of green technology products at Marvell. “The 88EM8801 is the first driver in its class to handle dual-channel LEDs with a variety of unique differentiation features that can be used to develop higher-end lighting products that are currently more expensive in the general consumer market.”

product description:

Marvell's 88EM8801 contains four high-power MOSFETs, an I2C interface, and a one-time programmable (OTP) memory block for accurate and efficient current control of each LED string. This is achieved by writing calibration and compensation data in advance in the OTP memory or by dimming control signals via the PWM and I2C interfaces to achieve the target optical specifications. Due to its high level of integration, the 88EM8801 eliminates most of the external components such as MOSFETs and rectifier diodes, saving bill of materials (BOM) costs and board space. In addition, the 88EM8801 is equipped with a dual-channel synchronous rectification buck topology that provides efficiencies as high as 95%.

Product details include:
• Independent control of two LED strings, allowing red LEDs to be mixed with cool white or blue-green LEDs for warm color and high color rendering index • Up to 40V DC input • One LED channel current up to 1000mA and the other LED channel 500mA
• Dual DC/DC synchronous buck with built-in MOSFET
• High switching frequency up to 800 kHz reduces component size • On-chip OTP memory block pre-stores compensation and calibration data • PWM control with up to 10-bit resolution enables 0.1% deep dimming • I2C interface supports OTP memory programming and Communication protocols such as ZigBee, WiFi and Power Line Communication (PLC)
• PWM dimming input control • Input ripple cancellation • Soft start • Over current and over temperature protection • Undervoltage lockout
