In the future, SMIC may intend to focus its operations on its own fabs in Beijing and Shanghai.

At the same time, Micron may be interested in buying SMIC's Wuhan fab to expand its Chinese market territory. Earlier this year, Micron acquired Numonyx for a total consideration of US$1.27 billion through stock exchange, and this stepped into the field of NOR flash and phase-change memory, consolidating the company’s position in the NAND flash market.

Prior to being acquired by Micron, Numonyx and South Korea's Hynix had a joint venture fab in China, but Micron intends to sell shares of the joint venture fab to Hynix. According to Micron, Hynix will pay $422 million to acquire 19.3% of the shares originally owned by Numonyx.
