Chuanmeiguang to acquire new core fab from SMIC

According to industry sources, Micron is in talks to take over SMIC’s 12-inch wafer fab in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China; the fab is called Wuhan Xinxin Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and is owned by the Wuhan City Government. Commissioned SMIC management.

SMIC, suffering from losses and trying to get out of the deficit, is said to be seeking to dispose of another fab. According to sources, the company is discussing with Texas Instruments to take over its 8-inch fab in Chengdu, China. Matters. The 8-inch plant core was also invested by the Chengdu government, and was commissioned by SMIC to manage it. However, it suffered repeated losses and caused SMIC to terminate the management contract and seek new owners for the plant.

Recently, SMIC has revisited the operation mode of the two wafer fab management businesses in Chengdu and Wuhan. The sales of these two wafer fabs were independent. Now SMIC will directly bear the sales of two fabs; The move is believed to have paved the way for the sale of the two wafer fabs. In the future, SMIC may intend to focus its operations on its own fabs in Beijing and Shanghai.

At the same time, Micron may be interested in buying SMIC's Wuhan fab to expand its Chinese market territory. Earlier this year, Micron acquired Numonyx for a total consideration of US$1.27 billion through stock exchange, and this stepped into the field of NOR flash and phase-change memory, consolidating the company’s position in the NAND flash market.

Prior to being acquired by Micron, Numonyx and South Korea's Hynix had a joint venture fab in China, but Micron intends to sell shares of the joint venture fab to Hynix. According to Micron, Hynix will pay $422 million to acquire 19.3% of the shares originally owned by Numonyx.
