Interview with General Electric's President and CEO Nani Bergali

Begalis: First of all compliance, compliance with the law, followed by the sustainability of the company is very important. We also need to meet the interests of our customers, stakeholders, employees, and the communities in which we conduct business. A responsible company must take care of all stakeholders. For shareholders, they must give them a good return on investment. For customers, they must provide good products and services. For employees, they must provide an atmosphere for them to grow; for the community, it must do its utmost to protect the community.

" 21st Century": The moral system in any field should give priority to moral justice. In the post-crisis era, for GE, what kind of moral system is necessary?

Begalis: Our behavior has not changed before and after the crisis. GE has always attached great importance to the issue of compliance and also has a very good policy. We have a set of compliance rules for employee behavior within and outside the company. According to our chairman's statement, it is called an outing, that is, if a person makes a mistake, he is asked to leave the company immediately. We have 300,000 employees. Everyone is not a saint. When we speak now, there must be someone in the world who is making mistakes. But the key is that once we catch a certain employee to make mistakes, we will immediately take action. This is how we do things. We have a set of strict rules that monitor the behavior of each individual. Every year, everybody is regularly assessed and through regular assessments, if it is found where there is a need for improvement, it can be addressed through training.

" 21st Century": Can you share with our readers some examples of what you consider to be moral justice? Why do you think this is moral?

Bergali: I used to go to a neighboring country Y two days later in a country X. The general electrician in that area was very busy on the day I arrived in country X and kept talking on the phone. The customer's care is not enough. I asked him, what are you doing? The reason we were going to see Y country's capital is the country's president, there may be a $ 2 billion -30 billion in energy projects, he said to me, I am working with stakeholders in country Y on the phone, see the discussion the President tomorrow matters, they want us to pay $ 10,000 to see the president. Obviously, some people around Y country’s president hope that we can see the president through bribery. I said to the person in charge, we definitely do not pay the $ 10,000! But he said to me, if we do not pay, there is no way to see the president. Without seeing the president, we cannot participate in this big project. " 21st Century": General Electric is a founding member of the Sino-U.S. energy cooperation project. What has GE done and will do in the energy cooperation between China and the United States?

Baikal: General Electric is an industrial company, so we don't play politics. What we can do is to help the Chinese government achieve its goals in energy development and energy saving through our technologies and products. Our strategy is to localize products, help the host country achieve its goals, and cooperate with large state-owned enterprises. In a situation that does not conflict with the interests of other countries, as far as possible in Washington to promote the interests of China, we use this approach to contribute to China’s growth.
