Japanese enterprise Nissan installed mass production of deep ultraviolet LED in spring 2015

NIKKISO will begin mass production of deep-UV LEDs with an emission wavelength of 255-350 nm in the spring of 2015. The company expects to replace mercury lamps in the medical and life sciences such as sterilization and skin treatment, environmental fields such as detection and chemical decomposition, and resin hardening and bonding industries. Nikkiso will produce deep-UV LEDs at its new plant in Baishan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, with an initial production capacity of 1 million units per year.

Nikkiso is a large-scale enterprise that produces industrial pumps and other products. It has long started to develop deep-UV LEDs as a new business. In order to convert the research results of the AlGaN-based LEDs of the Nobel Prize winners in 2014, such as Akasaka Yoshi and Amano, into a product, the famous city of Japan founded the venture company "Chuangguang Science" in 2006. From the beginning of the company's establishment, It was funded by Nikkei and was incorporated into a subsidiary in 2012. That is to say, after 2006, "Nikkei is in the form of joint research to accept the guidance of the two predecessors of Akasaki and Amano."

The deep ultraviolet LED enlarges the band gap by adding Al to the substrate GaN, and obtains a shorter emission wavelength than the blue LED (having a wavelength of about 450 nm). Deep ultraviolet light can cause dysfunction of DNA having an absorption peak at 260 to 270 nm, and thus can kill most of the bacteria. In addition, it can also be used for resin hardening and inspection and measurement for objects that are difficult to analyze at the original wavelength. At present, there are still very few companies that have already started producing deep-UV LEDs.

Nikkiso has begun to provide deep UV LED monitoring functions as an option for artificial dialysis equipment with the highest market share in Japan. The dialysate waste liquid flowing into the pipe of the device is continuously irradiated with deep ultraviolet light, and the change in absorbance is measured to grasp the progress of waste removal. In the medical field, it is also expected to be applied to skin treatment using ultraviolet rays having a wavelength of 308 nm.

At present, the standard products of Japanese-made deep-UV LEDs have three kinds of emission wavelengths of 265nm, 285nm and 300nm. The company also intends to provide customized products according to customers' requirements. The output with a wavelength of 285 nm and 300 nm at an input current of 350 mA is 30 mW, and the output with an emission wavelength of 265 nm has an output power of 12 mW at an input current of 350 mA. Luminous efficiency has not been announced, but the light conversion efficiency is only a few percent, and there is still much room for improvement.

In addition to the separate devices in the SMD and TO-46 packages, the product offerings are also intended to provide modules such as flow sterilizing modules. Nikkei also plans to equip its products with one of the company's flagship products, the factory wastewater treatment unit.
