Philips Lighting leads PointGrab $7 million to develop smart building sensors

Philips Lighting is putting more and more chips in the field of intelligent IoT lighting.

Yesterday (October 25), Israeli startup PointGrab raised $7 million for its smart building sensors, including Philips Lighting, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital Co. (MUCAP), the venture capital firm under Japan's largest financial group, and There are investors ABB Technology Ventures (ATV).

Founded in 2008 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, USA, it is a machine learning and computer vision company that provides intelligent sensing solutions for the building automation industry.

Their goal is to achieve effective building management and save money by improving energy efficiency. PointGrab proposed an intelligent sensing solution named CogniPoint that detects if someone is present in the building and turns it off if no one needs lighting.

Smart sensor

Micro-sensing devices run deep learning algorithms on low-cost embedded ARM processors for indoor occupancy analysis and commercial building energy savings, providing detection and analysis of the location, number of people and actions of indoor personnel, and energy-efficient lighting systems and Motion sensing for accurate reading.

Depending on the edge calculation method, the CogniPoint sensor can be operated as a stand-alone device or incorporated into other devices such as thermostats or lighting fixtures. It is a smart building sensor that performs all analysis internally, so images are not stored and are not transmitted over the network, completely protecting the privacy of the residents.

Supports PoE, ZigBee, and WiFi connections, powered by PoE, AC, or DC power. Based on its processing power and architecture, CogniPoin can also be used as a sensor hub to control other sensors that measure temperature and humidity.

The management software package aggregates data from individual intelligent lighting sensors, monitors and maintains sensor operations, and provides information to building management systems, including lighting, HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning), safety and facility management information.

Its chief operating officer, Itamar Roth, said CogniPoint's ultra-smart edge-analysis sensor technology will be at the heart of capturing operational optimization, energy efficiency improvements and business intelligence critical data.

Philips lighting executive Jacques Letzelter said in a statement that PointGrab's sensor technology is the industry leader and has a competitive advantage in customer pursuit of space optimization.

Incorporating PointGrab's technology into Philips' lighting systems will create a bigger market, and Philips' advantage as an IoT lighting company will be better.

As part of the collaboration, PointGrab currently installs CogniPoint Smart Sensors at several customer sites. The CogniPoint solution will be officially launched in early 2017.

Earlier, Philips Lighting Chief Innovation Officer Olivia Qiu said: "To compete in the Chinese market, rapid innovation is crucial, especially for new products with multiple functions."

In order to increase revenue and increase market share, Philips plans to release more than 1,000 lighting products each year in China, some designed specifically for the local market. The company will also accelerate the development of affordable home lighting products.

China accelerates the construction of telecommunications infrastructure for 4G networks, creating a solid application foundation for consumers and manufacturers.

In response to these changes, Philips Lighting has strengthened cooperation with companies from different industries in recent years, such as Xiaomi and Alibaba Group. Integrate cross-industry technologies to produce versatile products and enrich the company's business in China. ”

In September this year, Philips Lighting and Huawei signed a cooperation agreement to ensure seamless interfacing between the Philips Hue home smart lighting system and Huawei's OceanConnect Internet of Things (IoT) platform.

In the future, Philips Lighting will introduce more technologically advanced products, including intelligent lighting systems and products, and provide a large number of lighting equipment for the sports, hospitality and industrial sectors.
