STMicroelectronics Introduces Galvanic GapDRIVE: New Cutting-Edge Intelligent Integrated Gate Driver

The STGAP1S is the first product in STMicroelectronics’ next-generation gapDRIVETM family of single-channel gate drivers. This innovative chip combines galvanic isolation with analog and logic circuitry on a single die, making it easier for engineers to design efficient and robust driver solutions while ensuring superior noise immunity and reliable power control. Integrated with ST’s advanced bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) process, the STGAP1S features an embedded isolation layer that allows high-voltage rails to withstand up to 1500V without affecting other circuits. This makes it ideal for industrial drives, high-power inverters (600V or 1200V), solar inverters, and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). The chip’s 100ns signal propagation delay ensures precise PWM transmission, while its rail-to-rail output supports negative drive voltages, enabling compatibility with large IGBTs and wide-bandgap power switches like SiC MOSFETs. With a maximum current capability of 5A per driver stage, the STGAP1S delivers high performance and flexibility. Its common-mode transient immunity exceeds ±50V/ns, providing excellent protection against electrical disturbances. Additionally, the separate sink and source outputs reduce the need for external components, simplifying the overall design. Communication between the STGAP1S and the host controller is handled through a standard SPI interface, allowing real-time monitoring of the device’s operational status. The built-in diagnostic features provide detailed feedback to the main controller, enhancing system safety and reliability. To ensure operation in harsh environments, the STGAP1S includes multiple protection mechanisms: active Miller clamp to prevent unintended turn-on, desaturation detection during short-circuit events, collector-emitter overvoltage protection, output bi-level shutdown, over-temperature protection, under-voltage lockout (UVLO), over-voltage lockout (OVLO), and dedicated over-current detection pins.
