Drones entering airports have not only caused flight landing delays but also posed serious threats to aviation safety. This issue has become increasingly common as the phenomenon of "black flying" — unauthorized drone use — continues to rise across various airports.
According to a reporter from the *Daily Economic News*, in the first half of this year, the Civil Aviation Administration received 44 reports regarding flights affected by drones, an increase of 37 cases compared to the same period last year. A total of 790 flights were impacted, marking a significant rise of 689 flights over the previous year.
On November 23, Baiyun Airport became the first in the country to trial its "UAV Detection and Defense System." The system consists of two key components: a "defensive detection and early warning system" and an "unmanned aircraft interference system," commonly referred to as the "Cangwu system."
Once a drone is turned on, the system can detect and accurately locate it within just three seconds. It then uses precise electromagnetic interference to control the drone, forcing it to land within the airport’s controlled area. The system has a detection range of up to 13 kilometers in diameter, making it highly effective in monitoring low-altitude airspace.
Airport officials stated that the system enhances the technical measures for drone control, ensuring the security of the airport's perimeter and reducing the risks associated with unauthorized drone activity.
The "defensive detection and early warning system" works by receiving signals from the drone's map transmission and remote control, allowing it to identify and track the drone without waiting for it to take off. Meanwhile, the interference system automatically adjusts its frequency and direction to disrupt the drone's operation, effectively driving it away or forcing it to land.
Currently, the system has been installed and commissioned at the southern end of Baiyun Airport’s East Runway, covering an 8-kilometer diameter area for critical landing airspace monitoring.
Baiyun Airport technicians emphasized that the system can operate effectively regardless of weather conditions, time of day, or environmental complexity, ensuring quick detection and control of drones to maintain airport safety.
Furthermore, according to an analysis by the Second Research Institute of the Civil Aviation Administration, the UAV interference equipment used in the Cangwu system has minimal impact on the normal functioning of airport equipment, navigation systems, and airborne devices.
A senior drone operator urged responsible flying, stating that using technical means to guide and prevent misuse can reduce errors made by some operators. He also called on the majority of drone users to follow regulations and protect civil aviation safety.
The frequent incidents of drones interfering with airport operations have led to increased regulatory efforts. In addition to Baiyun Airport’s new system, other airports such as Nanjing, Chongqing, and Wuhan have also reported drone-related disruptions, leading to flight delays or diversions.
In response, the Civil Aviation Administration has released data on protected areas around 155 civil airports, establishing no-fly zones for drones. Additionally, the "Regulations on the Registration and Management of the Real-name System for Civil Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" came into effect in June, requiring all drones to be registered. As of August 31, failure to register and mark a drone could result in legal consequences.
Despite these measures, industry experts acknowledge that current regulations mainly address policy-level oversight, and practical enforcement remains challenging due to the temporary and hidden nature of drone flights. A civil aviation expert noted that while registration is a step forward, it does not fully resolve the issue, as drone regulation requires collaboration beyond the Civil Aviation Authority alone.
